'Rebel' hunting [poaching]-Africa

It was bound to happen in Zambia this year, no hunting in certain areas just primes the area for major poaching. Poachers don't understand marketing and laws. The Bureaucrats made it sound like shutting down hunting was a good thing????

"Anti's" haven't a clue what is really happening. I think these "anti's" should volunteer to spend time in the sticks, on anti poaching patrols and witness the effect poachers can have on an area. I doubt it will change their mindset, but it may educate them in respect of the real problem, if they put their effort into anti poaching as well as the hunting fraternity, both groups could be happy (us more than them, but that's a minor detail :D).

The ones running the show know, the problem is they don't care. Fighting hunters is far more plausible than poachers, if they shut down hunting seasons the hunting stops, what could celebrities possibly protest that would stop poaching? That would require actual work instead of just gum flapping and the lack of results would cause the easily distracted masses to abandon their cause.

Right or wrong doesn't even come into it. The most important thing to them is looking like they are accomplishing something.

I think you are right there, I am sure the "look what we are doing" image has a lot more to do with decision making than it should have.
It really is a pain, SpikeT knows my frustration, bought a nice shiny 416 (shortly before they announced the ban) and have nowhere to go to get it scratched and bloody!!
shooting targets just aint what a 416 is for!!

Forgive my ignorance but I haven't heard anything about a 416 ban. What is it all about?

pete means the hunting ban which also stopped residents from any hunting in govnt areas, so no buff to try his .416 out on......

Hey Doc,
Think you're going to need to make a few for Spike.T to pick up!!

or better yet

Bring some up yourself and we can harass him here!

I am positive he told me there were too many Sable running around the ranch recently!!
I think we should go investigate!
:biggrin2:

..that could be fun, Pete..proved he survives the harassment waiting for him when he gets here in a few day's time. I've been told he likes beer-shandy and dances like a girl..! :biggrin2:

Sounds good Doc, he mentioned that he is making a trip down your way.

Give him hell, and maybe a pink tutu to go!!

Keep the outdoor furniture away though, he tends to enjoy a rather large bonfire!!!

Can anyone comment on how poaching in Namibia contrasts to the rest of southern Africa?

That would be great. Mine just say "Trespassers will be violated"

Durban's 'muti' market today....

now where are the powers to be to check on this public poaching businesses? [are they licensed?]

how can this happen in broad daylight without fear of persecution? [and what does it say about law and order?]

and just where are the anti-hunting greenies now?
they surely mast pass this place by road,or at least know about these 'indigenous' 'poor rural people' just living out their 'culture' by unlawfully slaying and selling protected fauna and flaura?

or do they apply different 'rules' when it come to ethical, licensed hunters?

just wondering......

a lot of western observers who see Africa tend to think in terms of "National Geographic videos". They have seen a lot of wildlife videos and they have a strong sympathy for the plight of the animals. That's fine and there is nothing wrong with those sentiments. But to actually stop poaching and rebel activty in Africa is tremendously hard. The profits are real, poaching can be done by the "local man" or by major crime syndicates, and "rebel poaching" is often linked to disenfranchised groups. Truth is - a lot of the small African countries (and some larger ones) could reduce these problems if they treated their people fairly, improved basic things like roads and jobs, and did better police work. Rarely does that happen. So unfortunately, the animals do become the victims of widepsread corruption in the political systems of these countries. It's a shame - but it is often not possible to separate the issues. You can't control "rebel poaching" without some real changes in these governments.

Probably the best answer are the private game farms - for hunting or ecological preservation. It is possible to control what happens on a specific piece of land. So all these game farms may be one of the best insurance policies - that the animals are saved in the long run.
