Hi, I'm very new here like many others trying to learn as much as possible prior to locating a new rifle. I found lots of great info on the site prior to joining, but unfortunately I couldn't locate the following questions and information. That might be because the questions are ridiculous, or maybe I'm just not good at locating them in the prior posts. Here is the story, I will be joining a group of friends on a South Africa hunt in approximately one year, this will be my first hunt out of the US. They have hunted at the location many times and know the location well, and to my advantage have documented extensively all their prior kills and distances. Due to the lack of cover in the particular region many shots are taken at 150, 200 yards, and some out to 310 yards on plains game. During the trip I plan on hunting various plains game with the very real possibility I'll want to pursue a buffalo. I would like to attempt this hunt with a double rifle in .375 flanged, but when I saw the distances some of these animals are being taken at I began to question my plans. While researching the distances a double rifle can be used for, one gentleman offered the following advice that made sense and I wanted to see what you fine folks had to say about it. Have a double rifle built and regulated for 100 meters at the factory with a scope, once delivered purchase a second scope and sight in one barrel to whatever distance I think will be needed. The thought was the hunt would be attempted with the 100 meter setup, but if distance was needed the rifle could become a fancy single shot out to the 200 plus yards.

Is this the dumbest idea ever, or something done on a regular basis.

I think it will work, I was just wondering why you don't just bring a plain game bolt action rifle too? It's perfectly fine though to limit your shots to 200 yards.

I know taking two rifles would be the practical solution, but I really want to attempt the hunt with a double rifle. I will probably take a bolt action rifle just for back up in case the double rifle just turns out to be a bad choice. In theory I can't see much fault in what has been recommended, just switching scopes when distance is a problem and firing the double as a single shot, but I have never had any dealings with a double rifle.

I would go for it! A bolt action rifle in that caliber would easily be a 300 yard gun. Let us know what kind of accuracy you are getting at 200 yards, I'd be interested.

hi welcome to AH. i think your biggest problem will be finding a double in .375 flanged that you like, as they arent that common when you start looking. if you are going to have one built then you are pushing it to have one delivered to you for next year.

Well I've been told I can have a Chapuis built in about four months or at least have it by the end of the year. Assuming I can get a rifle with approximately 4 to 6 months to practice with, is there any other input on my thoughts of using this rifle out to the 200 yard range?

i would happily use my 9.3x74r double out to 200yds. i love double rifles so this is totally biased :D go order the chapuis and have them supply and fit the scope as well. have them mount it using claw mounts, and make sure they send you photos of the regulation targets, and also targets using the scope at 100 and 150yds before they ship it. if you arent happy tell them how you want it to shoot, as there is no reason a double with a scope cant be made to shoot so you can use the scope for both barrels. also if the budget runs to it order a set of 20 or 12 bore shotgun barrels for it. my 9.3 has 20 bore barrels as well and they come in handy for a bit of bird shooting on the side. its a handy package as most dont bother with a shotgun ,but this takes up hardly any extra space. i would happily hunt with just my 9.3 and 470 doubles, so what are you waiting for get that order in!!! ;)

That will work and if you pick your shots and work hard to reduce that distance (something not done so much these days with the long rand gear) you will find the hunt so much more enjoyable. These days I mainly hunt with open sights for the extra pleasure of the hunt.

Thank you for all the feedback, this makes me feel confident in my approach to the situation. I can only imagine the joy of the hunt after you have worked so hard to get into range. I like the option however of being able to throw another scope on and shooting something at 200 yards just in case time becomes an issue at the end of the day with light fading. Now that I have the caliber figured out and the method of putting that caliber to work I'm just torn between two makers that I have been told by the dealers can produce a gun within my time frame and price range. Chapuis and Verney Carron, once I get this last decision made I'll be set.

both nice rifles. i have a scope on the 9.3 but agree with mike and classicsaf as i never use it, much prefer the irons especially on doubles. let us know your choice of make .

Well right when I was getting ready to get the process started on a new rifle I was thrown a curve ball. A friend of a friend offered up a very nice Heym 88B in .375 H&H, the rifle has been used a little but in very nice overall shape and has already been regulated out to 100 yards with scope mounts, a must for my situation. The rifle even had upgraded wood already, just couldn't pass it up even if it wasn't what I initially set out to get. I've already got a Schmidt and Bender 1x8 short dot on the way to top off the rifle and I can't wait to get some rounds down range ASAP. Any words of advice on sighting in a new scope on a double?

Congrats, on the purchase, I wish you many good years of hunting with the Heym.

I have a Blaser S2 and have a 1.5 dismountable scope attached to the .375 barrels. It loves a Hendershot's 300gr TSX load putting a L/RxL/R into two inches at a hundred yards and the right barrel shoots clover leaves. On long shots that right barrel becomes the equiv of a single shot and I wouldn't hesitate to use it out to 250 yards on any plains game.

I was going to order Verney - Carron I mean within a day or two of writing the check. I was just waiting on a confirmation from the factory on a few things to make sure it would still meet the deadline. Then on a chance phone call I was getting advice from a friend who has dozens of doubles and he offered up this great looking used Heym for less money than the new VC gun. Having read so much about Heym I felt as if I was getting more gun for less money. I did look at the Chapuis guns and they would have saved me a little money over the VC as the total on the VC was growing over the 15K mark. It is amazing how all those little things ad up.

they def do add up!! i would have gone the same with the VC. i have had a chapuis 9.3x74r and it was a nice rifle but after looking at the VC doubles i prefer the feel and looks. enjoy your new friend. we may have to try in the future to get an AH double rifle only hunt somewhere in africa sorted for all the boys with their toys!!

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
