In another thread, I see a lot of fellow members in despair now that the Woodleigh bullet factory has unfortunately been burnt down. For this reason, I decided to compile a small list of alternative bullet makers who ( I believe ) are currently in business to accommodate our needs:

Monolithics-
a) Barnes
b) Cutting Edge
c) Northfork
d) Rhino
e) Kreik
f) Impala
g) Peregrine
h) Sologne

Lead Core-
a) Trophy Bonded ( not available as a reloading component; only factory loads )
b) Swift
c)Hornady
d) Labor Fur Ballistik

I'm panicking alright... I might just have bought the world's most expensive paperweight if I cannot get my hands on enough rounds... I only have found 20 or 40 each of the soft's/solid's.
If anyone knows who makes factory ammo with 350gr .375H&H in soft and solid, I'll be happy to hear it!

Barnes makes a 350gr TSX. Perfect for dg.

The Rhino controlled expansion bullet is not a monometal bullet, the solid is. The expander has a front lead core bonded to the jacket and typically opens to 4 or 5 petals that rarely break off. They also manufacture a copper expander called the penetrator.

Rhino makes the following

Solid shank controlled expansion bullets in .375

235gr, 250gr, 270gr, 300gr, 340gr, 350gr, 380gr.

Solid Brass Meplat

300gr, 340gr.

Penetrators(copper expanding)

235gr, 250gr, 270gr and 300gr.

The 340gr solid shank and Brass solid are a superb DG and large PG pairing. The 380gr is an outstanding buffalo only bullet.....I have shot elephant with the 380gr solid shank side on with great results....not recommended but it is a superb bullet....

Hopefully they will be available in the US soon....

I just wish Rhino could sharpen up thier consistency.
Often 1-2gr difference, the meplats also look different in the same batch.

Means nothing in the bush though, they perform so well.

I use them for DG and PG not target shooting never ever had any issues....
The purists can weed out the one and twos they don't like I load and shoot them...they work....and that is all that matters.....
They are not 400 meter plus bullets but anything this side of 300 meters no better bullet for African hunting...

Worse comes to worst, you can have your rifle reregulated for a different load. Not your first choice, I understand, but a solution nevertheless.

It’s my mistake. You’re right and thank you for elaborating . I should have made a subcategory. I primarily had solids in mind when I wrote this. I should also elaborate that the Northfork soft points are lead cored too.

I’ve used Rhino solid shanks ( 300 Gr weight ) in a .375 Holland & Holland Magnum on Cape Buffalo. Very potent bullet. After the 300 Gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, it‘s one of my favorite bullets for Cape Buffalo.

I’ve always found Federal’s 300 Gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw to be very adequate on Cape Buffalo.

I can vouch for the Rhino Solid...friends and myself have shot several elephant with these in .375H&H, they penetrate like crazy..

There's another outfit called GS Custom Bullets. They seem to have a good selection of dangerous game solids, as well as a host of other offerings. I have heard good things about them and their bullet profiles look fairly traditional.

Looks like I got my hands on 80 Norma .375H&H woodleigh softnose 350grains. @ 192€/box of 20…
No sight on the solids (FMJ) though

I think the despair comes from the fact that many doubles, new and old, are regulated with Woodleigh (or Kynoch respectively) bullets that, in turn, are/were geometrically and structurally based in many cases on the old Kynoch round nose lead core bullets. So the despair is around what the alternatives or substitutes for doubles might be - because of the regulation need.

As list of mono options is irrelevant for old doubles and in some cases may even be harmful - certainly monos are so different from the Woodleigh/Kynoch style in shape, hardness and weight that they are unlikely to regulate.

So a list of useful possible substitutes for Woodleigh lead-core bullets immediately becomes much shorter IMO. I would add Stewart bullets of RSA to your list as a possible like-for-like substitute in certain cals.

Bolt rifle users have many more choices and probably better choices than Woodleigh anyway, so I doubt there are serious concerns amongst this constituency, other nostalgic.

I have nothing against Woodleigh bullets and use them in some cals myself - and I really hope they're able to recover from this disaster and return to production soon.

Fair point. I myself use Federal 300 Gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw soft points and Nosler 300 Gr Safari monolithic solids in a bolt action .375 Holland & Holland Magnum for the bulk of my African hunting. This combination is yet to let me down after so many Safaris over the years.

But I always have wanted to take another Cape Buffalo with a .505 Gibbs and 600 Gr Woodleigh soft points. Just for kicks. Looks like I may have to put this desire of mine on hold for a while ( that is … IF Woodleigh manages to reopen ).
