458 Win Mag. Short Barrel Chrono Results...

I like the fact that Michael is observing reloading room safety. The white lab coat to protect him from chemical blowback and the sunglasses to protect his eyes from the gamma rays from the transducers and flux capacitors. The electron microscope is a nice tool to have also. Wait a minute .......... why isn't he wearing a Covid mask? I hope Fauci doesn't see this photo! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Never understood why you'd want to chop a barrel that short. Never had a problem with a longer barrel and you'll get more velocity.
Never understood why someone would pay to have it done? Can't be inexpensive. Cut and re crown and then replace or re attach the front sight.

Oh my goodness! I laughed so loudly my wife came over to see what was the matter. Well played indeed sir.
Very Excellent......... Those photos of the "Mad Scientist" are a bit dated, 10 years or so. I have a dear shooting friend who is a Doctor in KY. Back when when we were doing so much bullet tech here, he nicknamed me Doc M. There was also some talk about the "Guys in Dark Glasses" and some fun banter back and forth. He took it to the point that he had some Lab Coats made for me as a gift. One day I figured we would make good fun of it, and hence the photos........ LOL........I am very pleased you enjoyed them, that was the point.................I think my pal was also a Men in Black Fan, as some time later he had a couple of Black Lab Coats done for me as well.......

If you want to take 458 Winchester to the max my friend has done just that, being a true genius and 458 Winchester Guru, by using a long throat reamer he has been able to take 458 Winchester to and probably beyond 458 Lott. While I have not tested exact pressures, I believe they would be within limits as well. He has taken it to the absolute max degree and beyond my direct interests... LOL, but without doubt I would rely on his expertise without question on this matter.............I am talking an immense undertaking, and extreme amount of testing and work involved. No, don't even ask me, as it is not something I am well versed on.
You have that Kimber well employed as well...as a paperweight!
No talking crap about my damn guns either...........

You have no idea what I can destroy with a hacksaw, bastard file and a pair of vise grips! Oh, and the MotoTool... which they took away from me some years ago.............

I had him working in the Lab at one point, but I had to let him go, he kept pushing to have the B&Ms built by the Chinese instead of SSK......... You know, it just gets to a point sometimes.............

@michael458,
All teasing aside, your lab and r&d setup is really great. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and testing results on bullets, loads, cartridges and your short barrel rifles. I’ve read a lot here about mid to long range higher velocity cartridges and loads, but there hasn’t been a great deal of the same with the .458s and up, especially with your testing and knowledge of short barreled large bore rifles. Thanks for sharing everything with us.

I've read a number of threads/posts here on AH and elsewhere, talking about hunting in extreme heat and thus the increase in pressure in rifle cartridges. Who hunts big game in those extreme temperatures? I've hunted doves in the 100s F, but never big game. Most hunting here occurs in temperate and/or cold weather in the fall and winter. Never having been there, I was led to believe that African hunting is during their winter months with temperate weather for the most part? If so, why the emphasis on cartridge pressure during big game hunting in extremely hot weather?
I suspect that's a throwback to the days or Cordite, and early gunpowders; newer products are supposedly developed to handle hot conditions much better; just my "take" on the subject ...

Well that's another thing entirely. I have 400+ pieces of .458 Lott, but like you said I can make it from other brass that is available and will likely remain available.

I wouldn't join any rifle club that would have me as a member...haha!

Yeah you go play with your pretty little cases in your evil scientist cave and we'll all sit here and be jealous and call you names. :A Tease:
I suspect Michael458 would just laugh at any names we call him; strikes me as that sort of bloke ...

It's not too bad. If I can ever locate another cheap .458 #1 I'm going to have it cut to 16" and reamed to Lott or maybe .450 NE or maybe I'll take a page from @crs and go .45-120. That'll be a fun gun for sure.

Forrest,
With modern powders and bullets, the 1886 .45-90 can equal the 45-120 velocities.
The gunmaker that made my .405 WCF double rifle also made a .45-120 DR for a fellow Texan and his top velocities were similar to those of my 1886 .45-90. The extra powder capacity of the .45-110 and 45-120 was needed back in the black powder only days, but not now.

My 1886 rifle also shoots 45-70 well which is a very practical matter.

I gotta go now to pack guns and ammo for a range session with my son who is due by noon.
Test 1 is my 1895 .405 just back from Magnaport
Test 2 is my .45-70 DR at 100 yards

Forrest,
Maybe you could have your Ruger #1 Lott's throat reamed forward a little like @geoff rath has done. You'd be able to seat bullets out farther and increase powder capacity. I can only imagine the fun you would have with that increased recoil! Ha!

That's always a thought and then I'd have possibilities for driving VLDs and other fun long projectiles. We'll see.

Had it done with a custom 300WSM (I know, pea rifle) and safely pushed 175 Sierra MKs over 3100. No chance yet to play with a PROPER big bore, but there are plans afoot ...
Personally I am not a bore snob. I'd much rather see someone shoot something well and know their limitations than struggle with a cannon and wound game or themselves.

And the 300wsm currently holds the 1000 yard benchrest record if I recall correctly. So no slouch there.

It's all a goofy options thing. I really don't shoot the .458 enough or well enough to really justify playing with VLDs. That is probably a .375 expedition.

I noted that; his chamber dimensions are almost identical to those I specified for my Ruger; pure happenstance; it has shot sub-MOA @ 1,00 yards, not bad for a No 1

Some folk reckon I'm a bit nutz/crazy liking F/B rifles, just for the deep-throating option; Maybe I'm not that bad?

My Cz 416 Rigby and Mauser 98 458 WM both have 21 in barrels and at one point I had a nice 20in Barreled 458 B&M (Till I let a good buddy talk me out of ito_O) I like them and they both deserve to be hunted in africa. But my double keep kicking them out of the rifle case.

@TOBY458 AA2230 is also a very good powder in the 458WM

Have enjoyed the testing data on different barrel lengths.

As always practice safe reloading procedures and develop safe loads for YOUR rifles.
