Hunting reports

I need some help on traveling to Africa with my bow for the second time and arrow setup.

Last year I was advised to take a soft sided bow case and pack clothes all around my bow. well to accomplish this I had to take way more clothes than I wanted to and the bag was extremely heavy. In addition I didn't feel like that case was very protective of my arrows. I was contemplating taking a hard case this year and only packing in it 3 shirts and 3 pairs of pants plus boots. That's basically it as I am sick of way over packing for hunting when all I use when hunting are the same two pairs of pants over and over again.

What are your thoughts on travel cases for my bow?

Secondly I shoot a bowtech insanity cpxl at 75lbs and a 31" draw length. I shoot the 340 spin full metal jacket arrows. I also use the montec g5 broad heads in 100 gr. The problem with this setup is that if my arrows miss their target they blow up. On kudu and eland if I don't hit the shoulder the arrows pass all the way through and blow up. The only time I don't have arrows blow up is when I shoot middle of the shoulder at which point the animal running off rips my arrow in half. What should I do to get better life from my bowtech bullets?

Lastly, I plan on doing 10k jogs every day on my hunts this year with my bow. Not hikes but jogs, aka keeping up with dogs. I have 6 shattered discs in my lower back and any packs on my back that add too much weight crater it. Is there a light pack that could hold my bow adequately enough to work and not kill my back? I've thought about letting the trackers carry my bow but I've seen how they abuse equipment on prior safaris so Im a little hesitant to go that route.

Thanks for any advice in advance guys.

tap, when you say

What do you mean by "blow up"?:confused: Are you saying the the arrow completely come apart? Do you have pictures or can you further explain.... According to the Easton Archery site, using the following info (75#, 31" Arrow, 100 gr point) you should be using a 300 spine full metal jacket or a 250 spine dangerous game arrow.

I would suggent a hard case...you can still put some cloths in the case and you would not have to "over pack" to offer the same level of protection as the overstuffed soft case.

I just got one of these type of bow slings to carry the bow on my back in the mountains. You know those places where it is nice to have both hands free.
It might work for you.

Cabela's: Primos® Bow Sling

A cheapo hard case with some cloths in it that locks works for me.
Find one that fits your bow style and your set.
It will certainly carry enough cloths for the trip the way you want to pack.

Cabela's: Plano® Bow Guard™ SE 44 Bow Case

Arrows not blowing up.
Not with the pounds and speed you are chucking arrows.

Borrow a little 40# bow that shoots those carbon arrows nice and slow.
Carry a big knife for back up. :)
Not my first choice.

Bring more arrows.

gday tap when ever i travel with my bow i take a plano piller loc hardcase and its my suit case aswell
the only time ive been to africa the p.h didnt like the hardcase in the back of his ute as it niosy so i just left it unclipped and tied it in so i just had to lift the top and we were away .
this year i thought about getting a combo both rifle/bow but decided to just take two cases both plano pillerloc
31 inch draw you must be a big hombre id have to anchor behind my ear .
ive got some fmj 250 dg and they are heavy from memory i think they are 17 grn per inch dont
my old bowtec guardian fitts in the piller loc noworries as does my hoyt maxxiss (not ay the same time ) with a dozen arrows and 4 sets of clothes
the only time ive had arrows explode is when i miss and hit trees and the one time rock
i like the idea of that sling brick are they comfy and how hard/fast/ niosy is ti to release your bow from ?

There are some with snaps and elastics to hold it in place. No real noise.
It is not meant for quick draw self defence, but they are easy enough to use.

The strap on mine could use a little padding.

For going through the thorns it should work.
It's on your back and it protects your strings.

I might find another strap to secure it for running though.

yeah o.k then so you would use it on the hike in but not once you are hunting .
i was wondering about the cover over the cams and string , i thought it was for storage .
thanks

If i shoot my bow into sand or at rabbits a cow terd or limbs or anything cause my arrows to explode. Not just tree hits. The insert exits the side of the arrow. The knock goes flying and the arrow breaks clean in half. I also have a hard time getting the arrows to stay in most targets. Unless they are solid rubber and new my arrows blow completely through. I feel the bow may be more draw weight than i think as the arrows are definitely carrying a ton of energy which is resulting in all the pass throughs and such. My last bow shoot i shot a nearly perfect score on the outdoor 3d dange and destroyed 2 dozen arrows on very new targets with new bullseye inserts. This is my first bow in 15 years and 15 years ago bows werent this powerful as i remember but i also couldnt bench press 60" lbs 15 years ago either. Just new to all this new high end equipment. Definitely a new world for me.

Bricky,

Thanks bud that looks perfect. Im in lubbock texas now and theres a gander mountain in town. I will go by tomorrow and see if they have some in stock and grab a new bow case. Thanks a ton bud

Welcome.

I have to make sure you get there so i can read all the stories and see the video of Leopard running back and forth. :)

I have a hard case from Plano from the Protector series.
It has holes for 2 padlocks and is very sturdy and tough. It can take some beating from rough handling at the airports.

I also have the Primos Bow Sling and really like it. It has very low weight and is rather fast and silent to take off the bow with small movements.

When it comes to your bow and arrows tap.

You are way underspined with your arrows.
That leads to different difficulties. One of them is arrows that easier get destroyed.

I shoot a 70 lbs and 31" DL bow myself and with that I need 300 spine or stiffer, all depending on how heavy my insert and broad head is.
When I have the combined front weight from insert, weights and broadhead at 175 grain+, I use a 250 spine arrow.

With your bow set at 75 lbs and maybe higher, you really should use 250 spine arrows.
It is not strange that your 340 spine arrows get destroyed.
The 340 spine Full Metal Jacket arrow is 11.3 grains per inch while the 250 Big Game version is 17.2 grains per inch, so the Big Game version has much more material per inch and is much stronger.

So if you want to use the Easton Full Metal Jacket arrow, you should use the 250 spine Big Game version for your DW and DL.
You bow will tune much better, you accuracy will improve and your penetration will be better.
