Weatherby shotgun advise

I hear you on the gun lust. I own a 10 ga. BPS and rarely ever use it. I just like to heft the weight and hear it go BOOM every know and then.

All I ever shot was a Browning A-5 in a semi auto. I kept them stupid clean, and never have had a failure. But I'm almost 60 years old and guess I'm just old school. Hell, I'm the only one who still thinks a lighter weight benelli kicks more than my A-5. However, I did meet an Arkansas waterfowl guide who did agree with me on that exact same point. Guess were the only two :thinking:

No gun purchase. I still may but as mentioned, the old pump still goes bang so I am not in any hurry.

With proper cleaning..I have yet to have a malfunction with my old browning A-5's. But....I'm old as hell anyway..LOL

I don't have an A-5 but I do have a Remington model 11 and I love it. One of the first guns I ever went waterfowling with.
My current waterfowl shotgun is a Berreta A391 Extrema2. It is ultra-reliable, low recoil, and most importantly waterproof.
I don't really like pumps, but I do have a Winchester 1200 that works extremely well.
I only have one Benellli hunting shotgun (other is tactical for HD) and it is a 20 gauge Montefeltro. It is extremely light and handles great. I have used one exclusively for high volume dove shooting because of its ease of movement, fast fire, and reasonably low recoil.
When it comes to upland hunting, I prefer a sxs. Most if my shotguns are sxs 12 gauges. If I was going to recommend a sxs at a reasonable price, I would definitely recommend finding a Savage Fox model B. I picked mine up for $350. It is by far the best of the inexpensive American made sxs shotguns.
I don't have much experience with the Weatherby shotguns, but I have heard good things about them. I did hold one in a gun store and it felt a little loose and flimsy to me. It could still be a good option at a good price.
In the end, though, I think that all wingshooting can be broken into three guns for under $1500:
Waterfowl- Beretta A391 Extrema2
High volume dove- Benelli Montefeltro
Upland- Savage Fox model B

I had a fox model B in 20 gauge...sold it and I'm still kicking my a$$ for it. I do have a Winchester pr-64 model 24 12 gauge SxS which I love. I'm more of an O/U type of guy. Ruger's red labels and Winchester 101's.

Couple of thoughts. The 3.5 inch shell is a ridiculous munition - it will punish the shooter every bit as badly as the target. I have the good fortune to spend a week in Sask every other year chasing waterfowl, and nothing beats an ounce and a quarter of hevi-shot or its equiv on geese and ducks. With steel (which I abhore) the 3.5 doesn't shoot any farther than a 3 inch shell and actually has a slightly lower velocity due to the heavier shot charge.

I prefer using SxS's and OU's for game (my favorite wildfowl gun is a Lindner 10 bore hammer gun designed for the old 2 7/8 inch 1 1/4 ounce loads.) 1 1/4 ounces of No. 2 mattrix hammers geese at 50 yards like an 88mm dual purpose AA gun.

Most of my friends have more conventional waterfowl gun tastes, and the Super Black Eagle is the best field semi-auto that I have observed. They seem to never break, and any grime induced jamming is quickly resolved with a blast of gun scrubber.

Couldn't agree more about the 3.5 inch shells. Every year, I meet a new hunter with a SBEII loaded with 3.5s. Next year, everyone is back with 3" shells.
In all honesty, it is worth it to spend a little more so you don't need to use steel. Everyone complains that tungsten and hevi-shot cost so much, but as Dave Petzal says regarding premium ammunition, "how many animals are you actually planning on shooting in a year? More than 50?"
That 10 sxs sounds like an absolute hoot to hunt with. The last 10 gauge I shot was an Ithaca Roadblocker and that thing killed at both ends for sure. More like a cannon than a shotgun.
I would say the majority use the SBEII for waterfowl, but I've never liked it. Call me a wimp, but I prefer the lower recoil of my Beretta Extrema2. It has been just as reliable or me as any SBEII without as much kick.

I duck hunt around salt water every year. Several years ago I purchased a Benelli Super Nova. It has been the best shotgun I have ever owned. It will shoot up to 3.5" shells but I usually only shoot 3". It is extremely easy to take apart and clean and despite being comepletly suberged in salt water twice over the years has never failed to work. And at under $500.00 new I don't think I could ask for a more durable gun that shoots as well.
