I am looking for any info on Shaun Keeny Safaris. I met Shaun today at a sportsman's expo in the US. Seemed like a genuine individual. He offered what seemed a good deal on a 7 day buff hunt in 2014. Hunt would take place in the Matetsi Area of Zimbabwe. What if anything does anyone on here know about Shaun or his safari company and the area to be hunted. I have been wanting to go on such a trip, but am as green as grass about the players and logistics of such an undertaking. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to AH Salesman! I've never hunted with this outfit but I checked them out on the net and In 2009 SKS joined up with Sifiso Safaris in Zimbabwe you can also check them out with PHASA. Good Luck

You have to love these special relationships. Why not go hunt with the outfitter that has the concession rights? Makes everything straight and forward.

Some places to ask some questions and get some ideas.

Two well thought of Outfitters that operate in the area of Zim.

Look long and hard at everything if you are as "green" as you describe before you part with any money to anyone. Know what you are getting in to.

Good luck.

In many cases a foreign based company provides financial backing..... A local company holds the "rights" but the quota is bought or a percentage there off by the latter.... No different from any other business.........

Shaun is a great guy and seems to have a nack for sending home happy clients.

My best always.

Jaco appears to know Shaun which is helpful.
He also illustrates how business can proceed.

salesman, just noted you are American.
There is a US govt "banned list" of folks to avoid in Zimbabwe. You can look up and make sure you don't do business with them for your own sake.

Good luck with your research.

Good advice from Brickburn check on this be sure that you will have a registered Zim PH conducting the hunt that TR2's are in place and present before the hunt commences, area to be hunted is just as important, as Brick mentioned.

My best always

Jaco,

In this case, yes. I know Shaun (dad and uncle - Micheal Keeny - Shabalala Safaris), still n young and fun Outfitter operating in my region and in Zimbabwe, but he works hard for trophies and oufits good hunts...

kNow Mike as well, hunted some nice Kudu bulls there for a couple of years as well as the neighbouring prop, myself and Mike became good mates over the years...... He's tough on your tires though when hunting there... :) Sekkel BOS!!!!!!!!!!!

My best always.

Thank you all for your comments, feedback, and pm's. It looks like I have a lot of homework to do. Thanks again.

BRICKBURN,

Do you have such a list?

A daunting task indeed I feel for clients......., with all the smoke screens and things going on knowing who is behind what is virtually impossible, just my opinion......... I have moved my ventures and clientele elsewhere exactly because of this, just to complicated and the possible risk I run as an outfitter to take my clients to Zim as a favour or a request just to great...

Sad indeed, whish I was born 150 years earlier, The simple fact of the matter is my and many other guys return clientele wish to hunt Zim but do not wish to book through anyone else (their choice not ours)..............

During the last couple of years, I have just decided to take them somewhere else I still conform to the law of hunting and the land but prefer to do it in a different African country.

A great place to hunt (Fact!!) with great wild open spaces (Fact!!) and awesome trophies and people INDEED... just not a place I prefer or wish to run the risk of going.

The uncertainty of whether you are dealing with a reputable guy (From and outfitters perspective, MY PERSPECTIVE....) or the bad publicity SA guys have received, the government fingers, genrals and other dubious characters (not only from SA) makes is tough.

My best always.

Jaco,

My feelings also! Had similar problems ("with connections") when i used to do photographic safaris in Zimbabwe. Would rather loose the hunt...if you know what i mean...you just cannot trust everyone...

Shaun

enysse.

I am a director of Sifiso Safaris and majority share holder.
a Zimbabwe company had to be registered and as a non-zim resident we had to chose another name.
So everything with me is "STRAIGHT FORWARD".

Thanks for the kind words Jaco & Bush wack.

Zimbabwe is a fantastic hunting destination, with a lot of PT involved.
As a young Outfit I didn't have the funds in SA to buy farms/concession in SA.
I got the opportunity in Zimbabwe, were could afford to start an operation with my Partner.
it was a real pain getting the company registered, getting H.O.P sorted out. I had to fly guys in from Harare to do the camp inspection and approve us as a hunting operator.
I have 2 Zimbabwe P.H.'s who hunt for me full time, as well a learner P.H. who are employed by us.
my role in the company is Marketing and conducting hunts, running camp, improvements etc.
I have in 4 years got an anti-poaching team together(I pay them) have a Livingstone Eland breeding project going in ZIM.
I am in the process of acquiring Sable and buffalo to start a breeding project with them, as I believe the Sable population is in trouble in the matetsi.
we hope to one day successfully bid on one of the Unit area's and expand our operation.

I have recently been "BASHED" on another forum by an American Citizen & Zim P.H.'s who say my company is illegal and we hunt unethically.
Zimbabwe had the land take overs starting in 2001. All the private property in matetsi falls under this.
I have over the last 4 years done deals with the new "land owners" and have acquired these area's and quota's to hunt.
The Zim guys don't like this! that is why we are "illegal".
They have a bitter taste(I would to) about losing their properties, but they abandoned the idea of trying to do a deal with the new "land owners" and still farm/hunt their land.
My partner isn't black listed by the U.S. government, and we have put a lot of U.S. clients through our camp had fantastic hunts and they all received their trophies out of Zim, from Zim taxidermists(collect's wildlife artistry in Bulawayo).
I do know that S.A. guys have bad reputations in Zimbabwe, and unfortunately any S.A. citizen that comes through the boarder to hunt with clients is hated!

Welcome Shaun!

Glad you joined AH. I look forward to your participation here.

+1, I'm just making sure Shaun. I have seen plenty of problems on here. If Zim didn't have that licensed PH rule there would be no worries.
P.S. , I still think the rules are being bent and paperwork faked by certain operations. But that's just personal opinion. I hate when hunters get burnt by not knowing the rules or doing their homework.

Shaun,

Tell us a little more about your Zimbabwe operation. Are you hunting any areas in Zim other than Bingwa? Who are your PHs?

I trust Mike 100 percent, whatever he says....I listen too. His posts never steer me wrong. Sometimes I'm quiet on Zim matters. But when RSA guys are selling hunts in Zim it THROWS A HUGE RED FLAG. I would never buy hunts that way. Way to many Zim PH's to buy hunts direct.

Mike.

I hunt Bingwa Ranch owned by my partner Sifiso Mpofu( No Mike he isn't Obit Mpofu's Son) Luke Rukezo and Chief Shana.
next to Bingwa is a farm called Makeppies, I have hunted but don't hold hunting rights or quota.
then from is farms 52,53 and what is called state land.
I hunt Ingwe and Zanguja, I buy the whole quota.
I have hunted Breakfast, Masikilil and Kayaleto, 55 and 56, I am not the holder of these quota's.
hunt on RDC land in the Binga district. mainly Hippo and crocodile.

My Zim p.h. are
Simon Siziba Licence num 508
Chris Sibanda not sure what his licence num is,
Hubert Bhebhe who is our learner P.H.
my company H.O.P number is 0283.

I heard of your post in the other forum.
id like to get your mobile number so I can call you and speak to you about what was apparently said by you and the guy for AMS.
is this a possibility?
