Like probably many others here I have a gift for picking the most expensive whatever in the room. Guns, jewelry, watches, anything. I once picked the most expensive Rolex in the case without trying. Annoying really. But from now on I'm referring to it as "refined taste".

Which rifle do we crown as the best looking ever? You know when you go into a gun store and they are all there on the pegs, one just looks, good, looks right, it is plain beautiful. It may be the form, the proportion, the ratio of wood to metal, the stock shape. Whatever it is- that is the one. I am not talking about the ornateness, in fact lets say beauty in plain clothes to sort of level the playing field.
of course this will be highly subjective, we will get many entries, but I have a hunch there may be a convergence towards just one.
So give your candidate, a few words why, and a thumbnail if you are the first on that one.
I will kick off with the Ruger No1. The form is so pleasing and the ratio of wood to metal works just right.

I crown the original George Gibbs Magnum Mauser in .505 Gibbs . I find it to be just so well balanced and proportioned . Not as extravagantly ( and dare I say superficially ) engraved as some of the flashy rifles owned by Middle Eastern Sheikhs . But rather , elegant in simplicity .

Not only is it well balanced but the level of workmanship in the inletting of the stock is exceptional! Also the extended belly gives it the “business “ look.

Try as I might, I cant love cans. Guns are meant to go bang and scare the living daylights out of the rest of the herd.

Well I suppose it is a matter of which gun is best for its Era? Pre WW1 it would definitely go to Mannlicher rifles with Rigby small bore rifles a close second.
In the modern era my vote goes to any Westley Richards. Very recently I have discovered the Land drover Rifles made circa 1997 by Vektor. These are understated in their workmanship. If you can find one in 375 H&H it will have a Reimer Johansen action!

Hi John,

To me, the candidates from the early XX century to the early '40s, would be the Mauser Original factory Sporting and Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles. The Rigby rifles of the period just before the WW I, were "only" imported barreled Mauser actions, even with the sights on, to be stocked and, must be admited, somewhat worked at Rigby. Nothing else. Or less...! I think there were no better rifles in form and function than these. To me, even today...no mater the sligthly more drop at heel of their stocks than the current standard.

Any large bore Mauser 98 that has been in the bush; dragged in the dust; owned by any number of 'characters'; seen more sketchy situations than you can 'shake a stick at'; dinged to buggery; still shoots straight and awaiting the next adventure ....

After a lunchtime G&T in tropical Africa I have built up the courage to admit here that I dont like Mauser lines. Ok, let me finish before you start tearing me limb from lmb. It isn't the stock, especially in the latter day Rigby's, that looks good. It is that little rectangular block on the opposite side to the bolt, it looks so - inorganic and 'regular'.
Compare a Mauser and a Kimber Caprivi, up, down, left, right, front, back - no contest, the Kimber wins all the way.
Ok, commence ripping.
