4 buddies and I went out to ranger creek goose last week for 4 days. Main goal was to knock off sandhill cranes and speckled belly goose of our North American slam. Lodge was prefect clean and plenty of beds. Had nice lounge area with plenty of african game on walls, full kitchen and gun cleaning room.

Beautiful photo!

Day one. We set up for speckled bellies. Around 2000 dive bomb decoys and socks get out white suits on and we lay out. We saw in the 1000s of birds 10k at min. and they all wanted in the field we were in. It became very clear early on that we get are limits very quickly so we decided to call out guys one at a time and have them only shoot and pick out mature birds only to extend the hunt as long as possible. Toss in a few canadas and we had an awesome first morning set the tone for rest of hunt!

RBurg44, I’m waitin to re-live the rest of the trip

Congrats!
Those Specks make a fine meal.
Also looking forward to the rest of the story.

Looks like a great start, congrats!

Day 2- today we are after sandhill cranes “ribeye of the sky”. Short drive from lodge to field, we are hunting in a wheat/cotton field edge where birds have been working. You must be exactly on X for these guys. Wind we sustained 30mph, not ideal for waterfowl but we out there. Make a blind in the cotton field with piles of tumble weeds and gillie blankets. While setting the decoys in the wheat/peanut field. We are waitin on cranes a pair come in and we knock down both and after talkin we dont expect any other birds to dive into the crane spread and 30 mins later a flock of specks come any right to end of spread and land 50yrds out. We unload on the flock of 25/30 knockin down 5. Winds keep pickin up and next flock comes in hangs up in wind we knock a few down. Soon as ya fire a shot them birds open there wings up and are gone before the shotgun cycles the next rnd 30yrds to 60yrds that quick. We skate out a few more in a couple flocks. And end with 12 for the day. Toss a couple on the firepit that night wow! There were good!!! Cook just like a steak no lie we were all shocked on this figured it wasnt goin to be much different then a goose. Boy we were wrong!

Nice job! Did you bring some back for Jerry?

Day 3-

Get to sleep in today as we hunting a loafing pond. After the high winds yesterday to no wind today has birds scattered everywhere and theyd be flying high. Set up full bodies this time lots of them. Get set up in the aframes we join up with another group as well. Birds come flooding in late morning. We set up at like 9am. Guides callin the shots mainly at canadas as there isnt many around this year as so it prolongs our hunts! All i can say is us MD boys put on a show for them Louisiana boys. Great time and we all limited out!

Day 4- This was our last day. We couldn’t hunt past 9am. Told guide we go after whatever didnt matter to us. So he put together a quick buddy hunt. Somthing thatvwould be easy cleanup if we had to roll quickly he could do on his own. Had a waterhole some ducks and geese were using in field right over fenceline cranes were sittin there night before too. So it was all out mixed bag hunt. Little poor shootin today early on at ducks got the specks that came in and the only flock of cranes we cracked a few it was a fun quick hunt then off to airport we went! Highly recommend ranger creek goose and cody our guide. We had a blast and plan to do it again!

Hi RBurg44. Is this the Ranger Creek that’s near Seymour, TX? My buddies and I hunted that general area about 20 times over the last 25 years. We primarily hunted tanks (ponds) for puddle duck. Had some of the best waterfowl hunts imaginable. Lots of Wigeon. Pintails too. Never hunted with Ranger Creek. Might have to reconsider that! Thanks for the hunt report.
