300 H&H Thoughts

Bob
I looked up your National rum. Interesting stuff. The hard stuff more like Tequila. Some day hope to go for a hunt and I’ll give her a go.

Great caliber but in some countries ammo is real hard to come by...300 H&H and 300 WM perform superbly with 200 gr bullets in Africa

@IvW thanks, I have 180 grains I am trying out right now, I have a hog problem on my lease and the 180 are doing great things. I plan to try out the 200 grain have heard good things in the 300 calibers going heavy. I understand the ammo issue just love the old heritage calibers.

I have a fondness for the 300 H&H. I assembled this one over the course of a few months in 2019. I picked up the action from an Alaska online marketplace and had Hart send me a factory contour barrel. Dave Manson supplied the reamer and there was none of the chatter that gunsmiths have come to dread chambering the 300 H&H. I picked up the factory stock on EBay for $60, it fit as if it came off that exact receiver. Winchester 70 Classic Left hand. It is the standard magnum action with H&H magazine box, bolt stop, ejector, and follower. Finding the follower was the hardest thing about it, I ended up calling Sunny Hill, as the rifle wears their 1 piece bottom metal. As luck would have it, they had what I needed. Excellent service and a great product. The rifle functions well and is a solid MOA with 220gr Sierra Pro Hunters. I had trouble with new Hornady brass being .030 short from case head to headspace datum on the shoulder, and as such the initial stretch was too much for them and they only lasted 4 firings before case head separation. The Norma and Winchester spec perfectly with no issue. It’s heavy at a hair over 9# scoped. I like it a lot. Since the pictures I have installed a red Pachmayr Decellerator pad. Much nicer on the shoulder now.

Absolutely beautiful hope you get many years of enjoyment out of it.

Again thanks for all your inputs. I finally decided to buy a beater Pre64 magnum stock from eBay. It was in extremely poor condition but no soft wood or cracks. I removed the original stock and put in safe keeping. After a few weeks of sanding and the finishing I have my hunting stock. The beater had a poor white line pad and I replaced with the Winchester pad. The LOP is 14.5 inches so also more appropriate. I didn’t re cut the checkering but think it came out nicely.

Nothing wrong with composites. I have a few myself. Actually stainless and composites. I personally love wood the look and feel but composites are light and basically indestructible. My 270 WSM Winchester extreme weather which I typically hunt with here in Florida is in my mind a thing of beauty

My own 300H+H in a Mac stock has fooled a few people.

What type of barrel & barrel contour did you go with on your build?

I've got a Sako AV stainless magnum action....considering getting a Bartlein 2b or #3 fluted, 10 twist, finished at 24". McMillan will do a Hunter style stock with "Enhanced Edge" fill that comes in around 30 oz. I'm having it build for my wife.

I'm kinda leaning towards the heavier barrel, fluted & reduce weight in the stock to keep overall weight in check.

Keep recoil in mind....
Good point. I just had the gunsmith check the Sako AV action. It's 2 lbs 15 oz plus 5 oz with Near Manufacturing rail so 3 lbs 4 oz. I'm leaning towards the Bartlein #3 contour, fluted. 10 twist barrel. Barrel will be roughly 3 lbs 8 oz plus 30 oz for the stock. Looks like overall weight will be close to 10 lbs with a good 30mm scope.

Not exactly a classic Win. 70 build but it'll be nice for plains game as well as nasty hunts in the high country on this side of the pond.
