New Hog-Bear Rifle - 338 Federal

I have friends with NEMO 300WM rifles they use for hogs and it now has me thinking.
300WM OAL is 3.34", same as 30-06, 338WM and that's right...375RUGER.
Why has nobody made a 375RUGER on the AR platform?

Not sure about the why’s, though my guess is it has to do with the feeding and the gas systems of the AR10 platform. NEMO said they had to do a LOT of work and trials to get a reliable 300WM AR. Have heard mixed reviews on them as far as feeding, i.e. they need perfect gas settings and perfect ammo. When you have those they work great, if you don’t troubles start to pop up, at least according to a couple of gentlemen I know that own them and our local gun smith. An AR should never be that finicky, IMHO. Don’t believe the AR10 was really designed with any kind of a magnum in mind and, to me at least, pushing the design there is kind of the proverbial “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should” type of thing....gun guys have never been much on proverbs though, so that might explain it :) ;).

They need to use a FN-FAL type gas system. Infinity adjustable. Of course it does use a piston.
Now you have me thinking about a 338 Fed FAL.

That’s pretty much my AR10 right there :) Thanks for posting as it confirms my thoughts about the rifle and caliber. I’ll probably take mine the next time I go to Alaska. Not sure I can get away with a 20 round mag though ;).

Never really thought about 338 Fed in an AR10 prior to this thread... I’ve thought about an AR10 in either 308 or 6.5 creed.. but didn’t really see need for any of the bigger options like 300 WM since the only AR hunting I do is for hogs.. and 90% of that is at distances of 50-150 yards...

But I’m now thinking 338 fed in an AR might be an excellent Alaska camp carbine or boat gun..

Might be a good saddle gun option in Montana/Wyoming/Dakota/etc bear country too...

Compact and fairly light weight package.. lots of ballistic capability.. not crazy expensive.. and ARs generally do well in cold temps and wet environments as long as you lube them with the right stuff..

Has more punch than a 308 win. Ammo is more expensive though not hard to get. You hit a big hog with a 308 it will go down, hit it with the 338 Fed and it drops in its tracks. Best example i can use. Thanks for the beer salute :). Like how she came out.

Ok thanks for the info...sounds good ...all sorts of interesting stuff we cant get our hands on...

That’s exactly why I went with the 338 fed for my AR. Love the 308 but it doesn’t have the punch needed for bear, 338 fed does. And you don’t need to worry much about an AR in crappy conditions, they just keep going as long as you keep a little good lube on them. Mine weighs 9.1 lbs scoped, bipod, fore grip handle, etc and can carry/use 5 to 50 round mags. Would be perfect for laying down cover fire too ;)

Not sure how they are able to wring so much power out of the Bishop without being ridiculously overpressure, but I do like supporting a woman business-owner, especially in the firearms industry.

So the 338FED is obviously a capable cartridge for Brownies.
Hopefully a 338FED or a Brownie wasn't responsible for the ring finger.

Lol! I read this about three times, then finally scrolled up to see what you were talking about.
That was a log splitter.

I wasn't sure how you were going to take that comment.
Glad you can laugh about it now, and that it wasn't your trigger finger.
Cheers.

You know what would be the ultimate AR10, one in 9.3x62 :). Doubt it would work but that would sure be a thumper of an AR...with a 20” barrel and carbon fiber furniture to keep it light....if an AR were legal in Africa, that setup would be a killer with a 5 or 10 round mag for pretty much anything on the continent.
