6.5x55, 6.5x55, and 340 Weatherby. I did NOT chamber the 340 Weatherby which I find to be a very frustrating caliber for Africa. In a number 1, it provides horrific recoil while still being unusable for dangerous game, destroying meat on medium sized game, and just being generally dumb for anything other than Elk and Moose at distance.

If I had it my way, the gun would have been a 257 Weatherby.

Well then, it would appear that a new chambering is in order. How about .375 Wby? It stays true to your Wby desires and is usable for DG. That is beautiful wood.

We found a No1 in 375 H&H for my buddy, less than 40 rounds, immaculate. What fortune! Is it true to say the Ruger No1 is the most collected rifle of all time, which expleain why they are so hard to find? This one will be destined to a buffalo hunt.

The .375 H&H might well be the most collectable caliber in the Tropical models. I truly love mine. It's preloved and not immaculate anymore, but I'll grab it day or night and go without a worry. Makes me smile just thinking about that rifle. It might be my favorite, but don't tell the others...

What I find is so easy and quick with the Ruger No1 is to slip in a round when needed and then pop it out if the moment passes. Quiet, minimal movement, and no reliance upon the safety catch on the less focused times of the walk and stalk.

What I find is so easy and quick with the Ruger No1 is to slip in a round when needed and then pop it out if the moment passes. Enter the Blaser K95 and Krieghoff Hubertus.
Carry safely with the chamber loaded, then cock when you are ready to shoot.

It amazes me that no "American" manufacturers offer this type of system.

I don't have a fear of carrying a loaded gun behind anyone. This thing you speak of sort of sounds like the empty chamber advocates for concealed carry. It's easy to slip a round in and out in one's practice. What happens when the fearless PH misses a critical detail or fumbles his own gun? That is not the time I want to be seeing how quickly I can slip a round in the chamber. The time for this is during the shock envelope of your last shot, meaning you fired, hit, and are reloading during the recovery from impact. I feel like you're either part of the team or you're just the protected guest.

Here is my Ruger #1-H Tropical in .416 Rigby. I’m taking on a Cape Buffalo hunt June 2021. The idea of hunting “Africa’s Most Dangerous” according to Kevin Robertson with just one 400 gr. Swift A-Frame is a challenge I could not refuse. Also motivates me to dry fire practice reloading three days a week. Live fire 40 rounds at steel plates at 100-150 yards “off the sticks” and standing unsupported one day each week

I wouldn’t worry too much with the ruger. When you’re carrying it over shoulder, muzzle forward, all the branches are hitting the barreled action, not skating over the safety. If they somehow did skate the safety (a scope makes this near impossible) the branches are pushing the safety rearward reaffirming the “safe” position rather than nudging it forward.

gotta love the tang safety! Same reason they have them on DG double rifles as well.

Related to comments about most collectible rifle of all time? No. Not even close. They are collected because they are cheap. They are at the price point of worthless “working tools” types of guns. But they were made by Bill Ruger, sold at break even or a loss, and are one of the highest quality guns made at their $700 price point. (Average price over their 50 years cataloged) They have some junky issues compared to $5000-$20,000 Gibbs-Farquarson single shots of which they are a modern copy, but for the price?! Name another sub-$1000 Gun with a quarter rib, express sights, a barrel band, a walnut stock, a tang safety, and integral scope mounts. Doesn’t exist.

The complaints about the ruger 1s are all solved by spending 5x-10x the money. Bad rings that fit few scopes with proper eye relief. Better safeties that aren’t investment cast. Extended tangs so the stock isn’t a hollowed through-bolt design. Etc.

But for a gentlemen of modest means, it’s a beautiful weapon with soul of acceptable quality in any circle of Gun snobbery.

For dangerous game, please look at Strop safeties. That’s a cheap fix to a dangerous ejection problem with the #1. Craig Boddington designed it to make the number 1 DG worthy. An inexpensive fix for a potential problem during reloads in a panic.

Quite the hardship...having to deal with the VC.

The Blaser K95 and Krieghoff Hubertus are break actions, like your VC except single shot.
Many times they are referred to a Kipplauf (meaning hinged barrel in English) rifles.
They are most typically seen in Europe and the UK.

For dangerous game, please look at Strop safeties. That’s a cheap fix to a dangerous ejection problem with the #1. Craig Boddington designed it to make the number 1 DG worthy. An inexpensive fix for a potential problem during reloads in a panic.

Tell me where I can find them. A Google search didn't turn up much. I like the legendary arms works safety, but would like something in stainless for my Lott.

Wow that rifle looks so good, custom wood? Yes, thers is something special in stalking buffalo as selous did.

Great rifle in a classic caliber.

I have that same model and caliber no.1 and use it for whitetail deer, it a joy to handle in the swamps of Michigan, alas my scope is no where near as nice.

They’re great little rifles aren’t they. They look so short because the action is quite small while they still have a 20 inch barrel. Great handling rifles.
I love hunting with a single shot, its almost as if you have to concentrate more before you pull the trigger in order to make your only shot count, adds to the hunting experience.
