Hunt The Dark Continent With KMG Hunting Safaris South Africa

Nice !! How old do estimate that bull was?

Hi Jeff, thank you for the comment. Eland develop differently in different areas, vegetation dependant. Looking at his teeth, and other characteristics of this bull, I would say 8-9 years old.

Personally, when we hunt for Eland, we look firstly for the big neck and big dewlap, horn base girth, square face and mop. Horn length almost becomes the last factor in our decision. Some of the oldest bulls we shot, had not more than 28" broomed horns, rounded at the top.
This is not everyone's choice, and we have had requests from hunters' to take younger bulls in order to get longer horns.

Those who have hunted with me know how much I love Jackal. Even more so when I get my hunters to pose in the same photo....

Thanks , I was curious on how old they are when they start brooming their horns back. I hunted eland in north central Namibia and the PH told me that their eland do not grow the big mops even on older bulls compared to SA eland.

Well, I would say that your PH in Namibia is probably spot on. Without knowing anything about the area that you hunted, we certainly have that here, even just in the Eastern Cape. Some areas, the big bulls don't grow big mops, or some of them even have what we call blond mops. I do like the dark face and big dark brush though, so try and target those bulls.
On the broomed off horns, although it is synonymous with old bulls, I have to say that I have seen a few really old bulls that don't wear them down at all, so certainly not the rule. These bulls are rather scarce. Then you find a bull maybe 2 years younger than the previously mentioned bull, with probably 3" broomed off. It really depends on the individual animal and how reckless he is with his headgear. I quite like the worn look, have to admit. Offers a lot of character.

Jackal envy!

One of the craziest members to ever grace Africahunting.com . Here @jacques smith came away with a very nice Nyala bull. If I recall correctly, recovery of this bull was a substantial task. Some big valleys had to be crossed.....

@KMG Hunting Safaris

Do you offer pickup at Johannesburg?

If so, are there no/low fence options from there?

Good day sir,
Our main hunting area is in the Eastern Cape which is a 1hr20min flight from Johannesburg. We have low fenced options from there. Please drop me a PM if you have any further questions. I will be happy to give you more info on our areas.

Take Care,
Marius

Living life like a lion for 1 day is better than living life like a jackal for 100 years.
