Measuring and recording SCI... help?

Can anyone explain the process/benefit for having animals officially SCI measured and registered with SCI?

I'm and SCI member, what are the costs for registering each animal with SCI..and what do you get for doing so?

My wife and I shot several nice trophies in RSA this past April...including two 50+ East Cape Kudu..and am interested in seeing where they come in at.

Congrats on 2 great Kudu!

SCI record book fees are used for, of course, administrative fees first and 100% of the remainder of the fees goes to various SCI wildlife, hunting, shooting and gun ownership initiatives. B&C or Pope and young just buys you a spot in their book, I would not hesitate to support SCI any day of the week.

Basic record book entry gets you a card with the score and rank that can be framed and hung with the mount. For additional fees you can buy medals and such, it is all on their website www.scifirstforhunters.org . If you are interested in challenging yourself with slams and such, there are also awards available for these acheivements with the net proceeds of entries helping the sport we love as well.

Its not for everyone but it is a good thing if that is what you are into and you will help a great cause at the same time.

SCI is a most commendable organisation! If you wanna see where you animals rank, just buy the book and see where yours rank..and if they do!
The only issue I have with the SCI measuring system is that it is a little unfair to the Antelope Species. For instance an immature Buffalo Bull at say 45" still gets up there in the rankings. The system doesn't take into account maturity of a species ( in Africa esp.)...whereas with the 'deer' type animals, the bigger the horns the older the animal.
I once refused a client a 42" soft topped Buff. He was quite miffed until we discussed the merits of taking mature animals even if they were 'broomed off'. He was an SCI Chapter President back home and I'm glad to say we parted as friends after him taking a 39" old Dagga Boy!
SCI does good work! Problem is there's no way of solving the dilema as outlined above!

I agree, the system for African animals does no justice to old mature specemins. IMO if they adopted a system like the one used for North american animals those old timers would get the credit they are due. The extra 3 circumference measurements per side that just keep getting bigger the more the horns broom off make a huge difference. Buff and Eland in particular would benefit greatly. A young bighorn with 38" horns and 16" bases that still has his lamb tips can easily score 10" less than an old broomed off ram that is several inches shorter and has the same size bases.

Thanks Guys. The wife shot a brute..54" East Cape Kudu. The PH made a pretty big deal about it and even took a few pics with his cell and sent to his PH buddies. I know that PHs always probably brag up each animal a bit to their clients..but he was pretty excited about this one. I didn't pull the trigger but watched the whole thing unfold..best hunting experience of my life.

Anyway..always hear of 60" for the Greaters..what's "big" for the EC variety?

Hey no one will sneer at a 54" Kudu from anywhere! It is a great trophy any which way!
As long as the hunt itself was memorable that really what counts!

To register them with SCI, go to the following link. They have a list of certified measures and you can look for one in your area.
Safari Club International
They will all charge a nominal fee for their services. After the trophies get measured, they will give you a filled out form with the certified measurements. You then need to send that form to SCI along with the appropriate amount of money (I think its $35 per trophy right now). They will review the submission, and after a couple of months they will appear in the record book. You can then elect to purchase the online record book, or the bound book version for whatever edition you are interested in (North America, Africa, etc.)

Thanks for the help guys! Just to follow up I registered both Kudu. Each SCI member is allowed 1 free entry. My wifes made Gold, so I ordered her a plaque for Christmas- it was $99 I think and it looks quite nice.
