What's So Great About The 400 H&H?

hey ray,
so you shoot an ugly cartridge in an ugly gun - not.

Nice 416 Remington

nice outfit.
bruce.

Winchester model 70 w a 1.5-5 Leupold scope plus trigger at 1.5 pounds.
The cartridge - Woodleigh hydro (400 grains) bs Jed by AR2208 - 77 grains.

I have that same rifle in 416 Rem and 458 Win. Fine rifles! I also have a Classic Stainless in 375 H&H. All three rifles are set up with the same Warne Scope bases, so the QRW rings and scopes can go from one rifle to another with a quick turn of the levers.

Nice setup Ray! I agree, nothing wrong with the RM! It's really just one of those "which of Chatlie's Angles is the prettiest " kinda moments.

I was just tormenting. Your daughter can vouch for my sense of humor (after I terrified her regarding Australian wildlife etc). Lol

I have a 375 H&H in Winchester but honestly now I don’t think I’ll use it because I have my 416.
Almost all of my Centerfires are Sakos. As I’m small I find the Sako rifles just seem to fit me better but the Winchesters are great too.
People talk about the recoil factor in the 416 - well I’m all honesty I cannot recall anything bad. Mind you after using the 460 Weatherby (500 grain bullet) it’s only relative.

Wow! I have read about the Browning BAR being converted to .458WM, but the Garand! Very cool! Don’t let Toby458 see this, he’ll want one! As far as recoil, the Garand weighs more than my CZ and being semi-auto I bet the recoil isn’t that atrocious?
@CoElkHunter
I can see you now punceing around the whitetail deer woods or dressed in you 243 ballet outfit laying prone with a BAR and 20 round mag in 458. It would be fun watching you shooting prairie poodles brine with it.
Bob.

This is exactly where I was going...salesman o_O doing salesman stuff.
Buyer beware...right?
I'd bet there were several people at that very booth who were tempted as you were @TOBY458.
Having a knowledge pool like AH to draw from helps one to make an informed decision.
A decision that could go either way.

It's my opinion that people will look for facts to back up their own thoughts on a subject.
Instead of trying to be objective and weigh the pros and cons of a particular purchase.
It's tough with rifles (or cars/women...etc), sometimes they just speak to you and you gotta have 'em.

I personally like the look of the 400H&H and having one next to my 375H&H would be pretty cool.
Truth is it would become a safe queen for me because of ammo availability.
Along with the other factors mentioned above, I'd have to pass on it until LOTTO calls.
@BeeMaa
No need for it to be a safe queen just reload for it.
Bob

Sorry, I missed this question first reading. My only relative on here is my son, but he has forsaken me for University, girls and other young man stuff:(

Honestly, the dies and brass were easy to get. Bullets by CEB, with load data, and Swift (Bill Hober said the .001 will make no difference as the A-Frame will obturate to fill the bore). I totally get how the ease of the 416 RM appeals :sleep: It's totally adequate, if that's your thing:whistle: But, why not make that DG safari a bit more special? If you reload you too can join this unique and cultured group of 400 H&H owners... come and join us, we have tea and biscuits.:unsure::)
@Pheroze
You can have your tea and bickies club mate.
The Australian 35 Whelen club are REAL MEN. They have Bundy Rum and VEGIMITE sandwiches.

Buddy I think you have hit the nail on the head there. I can tell you why it sound cooler. Its because its British!! Trousers sounds better than pants. Pants is what I call undergarments!
@norfolk shooter
I say old chap us colonials in Australia just chuck our dacks or stubbies on with a blue singlet or a flano and a pair after Blundstones or If'n you are a bit flash a pair of R M Williams and go as and shoot shit.
Simple and the absolute pinnacle of high fashion..
After the hunt we take the boots off chuck on a nice pair of comfortable well worn double pluggers (singles are no good you get to many blow outs) sit around the campfire with a few coldies and bullshit to each other

I know you not uppity mate but really tea and bickies. You could do better, a nice red wine and cheese platter with olives on the side would do. That way all bases covered from wino to snob.

CEH,
I see that this old thread came back to life and is still entertaining.

WRT wanting a Garand rather than my 1895 .405 or my .405 DR?
GET serious!
It only takes one .405 shot to bring down most game, so who needs an autoloader?
My 1895 .405 has already taken Cape Buff and with a NF solid, it can take an ele or other big heavy game. Or there is my Simson .405 DR which shoots 400 grain bullets with only a little recoil. :)
Yeah, the DR is the ticket! Quick follow up as needed and minimal recoil. With a gunbearer/loader, we could shoot a herd of ele!

I wish the 400 H&H was simply a 375 H&H necked up to .423 caliber (the 404-375 wildcat). It would have fed as nicely as the 375 H&H and a little more bullet diameter would've made this the equal of the 404 Jeffery without the rebated rim and fat case. They would've sold a lot more of them.
