458 wm pet loads

what are you good accurate 458 loads for 350 and 400 grain

A good plinker is 15 grains of trail boss behind a 405 lead flat nose. Fairly accurate in my buddy’s Ruger no.1 and goes off like a pop gun.

I question this as being a dangerously under load of powder, and a non recommended powder in my reloading manuals.

Thus leading to injury to shooter and damage to weapon.

Are you looking for plinking loads, accurate shooting loads, hunting loads?

You are sure to get a variety of responses.

I only use 300 grain bullets, for minimal loss of meat and hide damage, thus I am able to set my scope once and can shoot solids or softs for a variety of US game, African Plains and Dangerous game.

I’ll check with him later, I’m sure it was 15grains but I’ll check. It was a 405 grain lead 45-70 bullet at about 1100 fps

My bad..........wrong caliber.

The 300 grain is for my .375 H&H.

I use 500 grain in my .458 Win Mag.

I only plan to use the .458 for bear and boar, in thick cover, here in East Tennessee.

Again only need to set but my scope once.

The PH scheduled for me to hunt with in 2020, views the .375 H&H much like the 30-06, the do everything caliber and the 300 grain .375, like the 150/165/180 grain 30-06
as the do everything bullet.

I still question the 15 grains Trail Boss, as my manuals don't list that powder as appropriate for any of the 45-70 rifles.

Although I have read that some reload the shorter 45-70 bullets in the .458 WM and .458 Lott when compressing powder loads.
I personally can't recommend doing this. There is just to much that could go very wrong. But, that's just my opinion.

Trail Boss is fine in the 45 cal rifles...

Trail Boss is an extremely bulky powder that most likely fills the case at 15 grains. It's made specifically for light loads in large caliber rifles and handguns.

Hodgdon's calculation process for use of Trailboss. If I remember, a max load in a 458 Lott was about 1000 FPS. Trailboss is great but do not compress! Excellent reduced loads for practice.

Accurate 5744 is a nice mid range power powder to make your range time more enjoyable.
