On gunbroker now 1 day to go. If anyone is looking

Appears to be a good deal for someone that wants to shoot with open sights. With the standard safety, you'll either need to replace it with a wing (M70) safety or mount a scope high enough so it clears the standard flag safety on the rifle. And replace a rotten recoil pad which should be simple for a smith. But being it's a .404J, someone will likely snap this up fast!

Just send it to me David and I will install my special “Anahuac Best” mount.(patent pending)
There will be plenty of clearance for the flag safety!

Yes, I have seen that before...and I think it was from you! I thought maybe you were going to post a real scope mount for a flag safety considering your DNA makeup is half gun anyway!!!

I’ve got a 375 Whelen Ackley Improved built on a VZ24 action that still sports a flag safety, soon to be remedied. It actually functions with an old Leupold VX2 in medium Leupold rings. It is a pain in the ass but it does clear. It would never work with a large ocular like on a Swaro, Zeiss or the like. But any hoo, why not just change it out anyway because the M70 safety doesn’t suck and the mod isn’t going to break you anyhow. I think if that rifle goes for close to where it is currently sitting it will make a nice buy and leave some room for improvements.

I bid on that early on but not willing to go near where it is now. Neat but really have no use for it. Rare rifle though. Only thing I would do is replace the pad.

I'm a bidder on that one as well. It's quickly leaving my comfort zone on pricing.

Biggest concerns: what the hell is it?

I believe it was made in 1970.

It isn't on the normal action type they used. The stock is different as well. The safety isn't the side safety zastava type they used. Bottom line, it either was born as a normal action and modified stock/safety, or its a one-off.

It is as stated a model 1100 African. Action is ex mil 98 Mauser with modded bolt. Its a pre Santa Barbara action rifle, no mystery really. Not a one off. I would have no problem having it, but just not for the price it is even now and will likely go a bit higher.

Perhaps this will help. The .404 was not always an option, but was at some point, I have seen others. The one shown here appears to have the Santa Barbara action but still has the 98 bolt shroud. But you can see the stock, barrel and sights are correct.
