Anybody have experience using this bullet on North American big game (deer, bear, moose, elk, etc)?
I have the opportunity to get some at a decent price.
My rifle is a Win M70 Classic Stainless re-barrelled to 404 Jeffery. Barrel is 25" with 1/14 twist. Posted a thread about it approx 4yrs ago as it was the first custom rifle I had built for me

With those Barnes bullets I'd think that they will blow right through the animals you mentioned. IMHO you'd be far better off with a 400 Gr. Swift A frame. I got a tremendous deal on some 400 gr. solids a couple of months ago. I plan to use them for target practice.

Agree with @Shootist43. Probably much more gun than needed, although on a big Alaskan moose, it might be ok.

herein lies the rub with the 404 as opposed to 416.
bullet wt availability, or lack thereof.
the 404 once had a 300 gn factory load making it far more versatile.
bruce.

Even if they are doing around 2200fps? I have Woodleighs in 350-450gr, just thought I would the Barnes a shot (pardon the play on words).

No! Absolutely not! What you need to do is.... sell that rifle to me! No need for you to put up with such recoil on the puny little animals in the USA! :D Beers:
Now that's funny!
I'm sure my 400gr bullet going 2100-2200fps will do less damage than a 243, 270, 7mm Mag etc.

That rifle looks like it was made for the Alaskan/Canadian bush. You need to take it for brown/grizzly asap. I have no experience with the caliber, but a 300 grn .375 barnes will cut through even a big brown bear at reasonable ranges.

Was this a 375 H&H that you had rebarrelled? If so, did they have to do a lot of modifications to the action, besides opening up the bolt face?

I have used mine works great in Africa for cape buff and eland

Yes it was originally a 375H&H. I have to dig up the correspondence between the gunsmith and I, but I believe they modified the bolt face, feed ramp, slightly and cut an extra extractor groove. Really didn't have to do much.

Hawk still produces a 300 grain bullet in .423 diameter if you are a handloader and were wanting to try that weight bullet in a .404 for whatever reason. I am not sure if there are any others.
