I have been a member for awhile but haven't participated much until now. A few months back I won a Weatherby Lazerguard .300 WMag. I always wanted a .375 H&H. Well I just traded for a Win Mod 70 in .375. It came with a box of Fed Cape Shocks 300gr Swift A-Frames. I put a Leupold VX6HD 1-6 x 24 CDS-ZL2 with the lighted dot reticle on a Talley base and QD rings. It might have been me but it didn't really shoot the A-Frames very well (3-4 in at 100 yds). Just bought 1 box ea of Fed 270 soft points and Fed 300 gr Nosler Partitions to try some other things. Based on the Back to Barnes thread going right now, I believe I should start thinking about reloading instead because it also sounds like I can hunt just about anything with this caliber and the 250 gr TTSX. Planning on May/June 2020 for Nambia and an Eland.

The load I worked up for my 375 h&h will certainly handle an Eland.
Try it out and see if your rifle likes them.

Good luck

If you get into hand loading for that rifle, I have the same and several loads that have proven quite accurate in multiple M70s. Would be happy to share with you.

First of all, welcome back to AH. Secondly: You chose a fine rifle and scope. Third: YES reload! You can taylor the loads to your gun. Choose from a myriad of bullets and load combinations. Heck, you’ll probably find a good 300 gr Swift A-frame load. And the only way you can afford much practice with bigger bores, like the .375 and up, is to reload. Great hobby / obsession.

You forgot Fourth...pics or it didn't happen.
Love to see a few pictures when you have a chance.

Congrats on the new addition.

Yes sir that 375 H&H will do everything you want to hunt.

Congrats on a real winner in your M70 375. Try Barnes 235g TSX with 43 g of 4064 and Barnes 350 g TSX with 58 g of 4064. Accurate and deadly in my Win 70 375HH. These are handloads so you just gotta join the reload gang. All kinds of fun concocting loads for different situations---at a fraction of factory fodder.

I have shot a lot of critters with my M70 375. Mine is most accurate with Federal Premium Trophy Bonded factory loads... But I don't reload, yet.

I used my 375 H&H with 250 TTSX to take my eland. Worked perfect! Using the same it worked well on croc, sable, black wildebeest, warthog and even on caracal hitting it low from the front so not ruining the Cape.
If you're looking for a factory Swift A-frame, try Swift’s factory load. 3/4” groups at 100 meters from my MRC.
The Barnes factory 300 TSX shoots extremely accurate as well. I took Cape buffalo, bushbuck and bushpig with it, but it is a little hard for the smaller animals, so you have to place a killing shot well.
I have found that the Barnes are most accurate from a dirty barrel.

Oh yes, glad you’re back!

  1. Thanks to all for the comments and recommendations. I reload for most everything else so I suspect that is where I will end up on this case as well. BeeMa, see attached. The hide under the rifle came from the Oryx below.

Beauty of a rifle...and Oryx.
You are gonna love the 375H&H.
Mine (CZ550) has become my "go to" hunting rifle for everything from Squirrel to Cape Buffalo.

Let us know how the load development goes.
Cheers.

If I were limited to just one rifle, it would be my Win 70 Safari Express in 375HH. My do all outfit.

I reload my own and love the load workup process. BUT another route you could go is to check out Superior Ammunition-sample packs of different bullets are a good option or send them your rifle and they will build a custom load for you. Just another option you could look at-

Can you double-check your 235gr TSX load please? I think you have a typo.

I want to say thanks again for all the advice. Today was day one of my second retirement so I thought it appropriate to go to the range and start getting ready for Namibia in June. The photo is of a 100 yd group of Barnes 270 gr TSX over 67.9 grs of RL-15

Tarbe,
Right on. That load should be 63g of 4064 for Barnes 235g TSX and 58.2g of 4064 for Barnes 350g TSX.
