I have always wanted a double rifle in 470ne. But as life has it I don’t know if I would ever be able to afford one. Since the main thing for me is the caliber 470 ne, I was thinking of building one on a ruger no1. But since those rifles weighs a bit less than a double. How would you rate the recoil from a ruger? Today I use a BRNO ZKK 602 in 458 lott for the most of my big game hunting. Have any of you any big bore ruger no1?

david,
when I heard that 450/400 was available in the ruger no 1, I needed one.
luckily I had the opportunity to fire one before I spent money.
the gun was so light that the recoil was high speed as well as hard..
the 470 nitro would be more of the same.
then I have always thought of the ruger in a calibre like 7mmstw with a 28" barrel.
but the reality of not having a magazine strikes home.
I can still load the bolt gun singly if I so desire, but I never do!
bruce.

If you're building one can't you get any weight you want with weight in the stock or barrel or both? With ballistics of a 500 grain bullet at 2150 it is more-or-less the recoil twin of the .458 WM. What is the weight of the Lott you shoot?

My Lott weighs about 4kg bare and about 5kg with rings and scope. I do prefer shooting it with the extra weight with rings and scope

If you’re going to have one made up, why stop at a .470 NE? ;)

One can always find a lot of really nice .458 Win Mag Ruger No. 1 rifles on the used market. Go on any online auction site, or gun listing, and you’ll have your pick. Back in the day they were among the more affordable means of obtaining such a toy (most obviously never saw action in the game fields of Africa), and Ruger sold a disproportionately large number. It’s a wonderful rifle, a lot of gun for the money.

CTDolan - what caliber is that and what weight?

I had one in 458Lott. Once I put a recoil pad on the rifle it was ok but it’s still a heck of a kick. Actually my Merkel 470 NE double kicks about the same.

I have a #1 in .458 Lott. It weighs 10 lbs 1 oz with a 1.5-5x Leupold scope in Ruger rings. Recoil is hefty but not gruesome like a .460 Wby. Everyone feels recoil differently. For me, I can’t tell that much difference between a .375 H&H and a .416 Ruger (the .416 has a touch more). The Lott definitely has some more thump. I try to limit my practice sessions to around nine rounds to avoid developing a flinch. A better recoil pad might help.

I never develop a flinch unless the rifle actually hurts me and that has only happened when I have fired rifles without a one inch thick rubber pad. I've never fired an ultra-light elephant rifle, however, but we aren't talking about one of those here. The Ruger 1 in .416 Rigby weighs in at 9 pounds sans scope, so I would think it very easy to build a 10.5 pound scoped Ruger 1 .470.

But I've heard some people say the Ruger 1 kicks unusually hard. Perhaps it is due to the stock shape. (?)

I had one in a 458 and it hit pretty hard. You can always add some weight by putting a recoils reducer or two in the stock.

Should be fine in 470 if you’re ok shooting a 458 Lott in a 602. That’s no pussycat to shoot either since they are fairly light.

most Ruger No. 1s are butt heavy and light in the barrel (so are other single shots). SO... you have the opportunity to use a good, stiff, heavy barrel to add weight and balance - both of which will help tame recoil.

The Ruger No. 1 Tropical, in particular in the .458, has a massive barrel. It's like a section of sewer pipe. I think it feels good in the hands, though. The weight adds heft, which helps in the recoil department, but also steadies the shot and helps limit muzzle rise.

I have a No. 1 in .450 NE. I'm planning to use it for black bear next month. Recoil doesn't typically bother me but this rifle is pretty light for caliber. It's definitely not one to spend all day at the range with.

The No 1 stock has too much drop at the comb for use with a heavy caliber, at least for me. A properly designed stock would go a long way in taming recoil.

Up to a week ago I owned a Ruger No 1 in 450 NE , one of the Craig Boddington Special Edition rifles. It is a beautiful rifle.
I am no novice at shooting large calibre rifles, but that rifle used to kick the snot right out of me.
