They were elephant hunting, but with no intention to kill tusked cows (and I honestly don't know if the hunt was for tuskless or a bull, but based on who the hunter was I'd assume tuskless).

Cows charged in and they both had to be shot. I don't think there is any CYA going on here. I talked to Buzz about this at DSC while discussing some other business and it seems pretty straight forward self defense.

Not sure how you think that anything other than allowing yourself to be trampled would appease the anti loons. To them there is never a good reason for a hunter to kill an elephant. Never .

Agreed Royal, I chatted with Buzz about it as well. Total non-incident other than the anti blather.

Don't misunderstand me. I said I don't doubt the story. What I find amusing is the sort of "there I was minding my own business" in the Zim bush with rifles. I just think its sort of funny. Of course they were elephant hunting.

Trust me one elephant coming towards you is thought provoking! When it’s two not a whole lot of thought other than survival. The guy should have know better than to post the pictures on social media.

On CBS website: The one link provided headed to AR hunt report.

The hunt started with a bang . . . literally. Less than thirty minutes into the first morning of the first day we experienced a double elephant cow charge. This was obviously a first for me but it turns out it was a first for Buzz as well. We saw a group of cows from the road and decided to follow them to see if a tuskless was in the group. We caught them quickly and identified a tuskless. We positioned ourselves to get a good look at the tuskless and concluded that since it was just Day 1 we would pass. An instant later she came in an all out charge. Buzz and I both fired two shots a piece and she went down. Then from behind us a large one-tusked cow charged at full speed. We each fired one shot and she crashed to the ground with her hind legs out behind her, indicating the speed and determination of her charge. The two cows were less than forty feet apart with Buzz and I in the middle. Fortunately we had positioned ourselves in some open ground so we had good visibility when the charges came. Certainly a little more excitement than we had bargained for on Day 1.

@CAustin ,

He didn't post them on FB. They were taken and posted by others.

Remember, sites like AR and AH are social media too, and are visited by antis just to steal and use pictures at times . So.... You've posted plenty of pictures to social media (as have I, both on AH and FB).

This isn't any different than a couple of years ago when your picture with your lioness was taken and posted on the "hunt the hunter" FB page in an effort to shame you. The only difference is this one has received much more media attention.

Not disputing what you are saying at all and perhaps I should have qualified what I shared. My point really should have included with all the anti activity and fervor in the last two years posting that picture anywhere might have been unwise. Secondly, I didn’t realize that the hunter had not posted the pictures. From reading the story associated with the photo my perception was that the hunter did make a post somewhere. To your point the antis do get pictures and they do try to make something out of it that it isn’t. If the guy didn’t post the photo......where did the explanation of the situation come from!?
Or is there a couple of story lines being put together in the post?
Frankly I wish the guy well in fighting off the profane antis and their threats of harm.

I said he didn't post it to FB. It was posted in his AR hunt report with pictures, no different than your hunt report or mine.

Thanks for your edifying commentary!

I've shared in the joy a few times myself. (*ick heads.)

I can personally vouch for this happening in the bush...2013 hunting elephant in Zimbabwe Vic Falls/ Matetsi area, we were charged on 3x occasions in short succession by angry Ellie's out of a herd.
Matriarch stopped her charge at about 20m...thrna young bull came flat out for us, turning away at very close range.. a few minutes later a group of young bulksthathad already filed the scene, came back with vengeance and I had to shoot the leading guy!!!
Two years later, hunting elephant in the Gonarhezou area of Zim, a large bull and some cows were spotted from the vehicle.
We stopped, got out and proceeded to track them...they were close and stomach rumblings could be heard..no visuals.
Wind was changing...they scented us and trumpeted their warning to us...we continued..still no visuals...next thing thetravjerwnd PH are shouting like banshees...THEN I HAD VISUALS!!!
THREE cows coming flat out at us...the leading cow was stopped at 9m eithdhots from myself and the PH. Fortunately for us, the other two cows turned and hightailed it after the bull otherwise we would have been run over for sure!!!
A whole day spent with affidavits and forms etc at the Chief Wardens office...the game scout with us could corroborate the story and it was classified as " elephant cow dhot and killed in self defence.
So, 2x huntable abd I've been charged 4x times!! The PH,'s Joked that I would have a reputation leading to no one wanting to hunt with me anymore!!!!!
These poor animals are so heavily poached that the instant they smell man, they become extremely aggro...

That's the ironic truth, they hate seeing things killed as any loss of life is a tragedy but at the same time actively want hunters to be killed and celebrate the fact.

Proves their hypocrisy to the folks in the middle. I truly believe it's part of the reason the tide is turning back towards hunting just a little bit.

And I think the same thing is happening with the world at large. People are tired of promises and want actual results.
