WANTED: 38" Plus Buffalo

We will be looking at a new concession hopefully in the next few days! Supposedly plenty of buff in the 40" to 42" range of course they will be free ranging. Borders Wankie National Park.

100%.
A buff (in fact any animal) that you have to really hunt - as in walk for hours or days, spoor, stalk, etc is worth something regardless of size.
Conversely, one shot off feed or from a hide isn't worth having regardless of size - save maybe for a bow hunter.
Your trophies should "speak" to you , rekindling the whole experience rather than being just a big set of horns.
Anyway, that's how I see it.

I mean no offense and I truly hope you find what you are looking for, but every time I see a thread like this it makes me laugh. Imagine how we would react if women walked around going "I'm looking for men with at least 12 plus inches" whatever happens just enjoy the experience. A buff hunt is a lot of money, but it doesn't have to be wasted if you don't get that 38" stud, lol
I think it all in his wording. Check out @Red Leg 's reply. He needs to be more specific as to his desires. Does he want to stay in a castle with every whim catered? Does he want a wild hunt as in days of yore?

Agreed.
Some people think that staying in a comfy lodge and shooting a half tame animal with big horns is a quality hunt.
Personally I think that sucks.

Hi

We will send you a PM.
Thank you.

Kind Regards
Magdel Oosthuizen

JP has a point, but for about 20K you can get a very good plains game and buff hunt in South Africa or Namibia

So here is a question to debate- 1 hunt is on open flat free range country and takes a guy a full 10 day hunt walking in the heat to get a buff, the other is on a perimeter fenced 30k acre concession in say the east cape, where it is mountainous and takes the hunter a full 7 day hunt hiking up and down the the mountains trying to find a good animal and then get a clear shot. Which hunt is more physically taxing, and/or over harder overall? Is there any ethical superiority to the free range bull in this circumstance? Assume both bulls are old hard boss specimens.

Bear in mind fellas not everyone has $20-30k to fork out for a free range buff hunt.

Very good bush hunts are available for under $20. In fact, I’ve been on 5, all between $13 and $18 incl transport and trophy fees.

There's always exceptions to the rule. For what it's worth converted to aud an $18k usd hunt is nearly $27k my money.

99.9% of my hunting has been diy/unguided and all of it unfenced (except when i dipped my toe into guiding clients for a couple of years on estates). But i don't have a problem with someone wanting to chase a big buff behind wire if that's the only way they can afford it whether it's for me or not. No one is ever intentionally offensive on this forum (which I love) but i could see how a guy could get a bit put off when people start saying "why would you do this when you could do that" "this isn't worth something done this way, only that way" etc.

That's all neither here nor there, I'm just getting at the fact that there's guys on here who obviously aren't restricted by cost and forget that most folks don't have that kind of disposable income. As long as it's legal and you're having fun, do what pleases you I say!

Well, like you, I grew up hunting. I’ve spent most of my adult life in Canada, Wyoming and Alaska. I had not hunted with a guide until I went to Africa. I prefer wilderness and would love to hunt unguided if it were legal and practical from an equipment/logistics POV. My only point in my post was that truly wild bush hunts can be had for less than some might think. Not as low as what ranch hunts have become to your point.

BTW...........the only measurement I ever see on buff is the overall width. 36", 41" etc. This one number sure doesn't tell it all, does it? I recently saw an old battle hardened 33" buff that I would have been honored to have hunted. So I've got a little more to learn on field judging these animals before next year's hunt. Best to all..............FWB

I have been reading all this and alot of other things about Buffalo Hunts. I am going on my first Buff hunt in 12 days. I have decided width means nothing to me. Its the drop of the horn or boss size. But most importantly it is the hunt itself. I doesn’t matter to me of its 33 or 43 inches. The hunt itself is what matters to me

I appreciate your replies We've been on 1 day hunts and 10 day hunts point is.....enjoy!
as far as the 12".... I got that covered! (lol just kidding)

Exactly. Quality of the hunting experience or quality of the buffalo? Do you want to hunt him in a free range environment like Moz or Zim or a game ranch in South Africa? Do you want a guaranteed 38" bull or an experience where your PH is doing everything in his power to get you the best buff he can find in the time allotted? Working through that can do a lot to focus your search. Each of those environments can provide a quality hunting experience - but not all.
Thank you for reminding us

Yep!

I fly out tomorrow for a buff hunt..

I dont care if the best thing we see is a broken horn 34 or a classic profiled, pristine conditioned 44..

Just give me a chance at a nasty old bull with a thick and hard boss.... and a challenging hunt before he gets put in the salt.. and I'll be overjoyed..

Yes and $20,000 USD is 280,000 Rand. What does $27k Australian and conversion ratios have to do with anything?

Who cares about DIY vs. guided hunting? It's not a contest, is it? I have guided thousands of animals in Colorado, Alaska and Mexico but I also use guides myself when I don't have as much local knowledge, time or access. I have used guides in Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Nevada, Alaska, Mexico, Canada and Africa. I am very confident in my own hunting abilities and I probably have more experience than most but I don't take it as a slight to my abilities to hunt with another guide. It's not an ego thing - it's hunting. It can be fun to see how other people guide/hunt.

There are all income classes and types on AH. I probably fall in the middle. So what?? If you don't have the money to afford a buffalo hunt in Tanzania, so what? If all you can afford is a South African PG hunt, so what? If you can afford an elephant, lion, leopard and PG hunt in TZ, so what? Why do I always have to see posts about the income disparity of individuals on AH? There is always someone with more money. So what? I just enjoy the AH site and hearing about other hunters safaris whether it's in SA or TZ.

As for the guy that started this post, I don't have a problem with him researching areas where trophy quality may be higher than others. That is what I do. The experience is also just as important and I am betting he knows that as well.

Everyone hunts for different reasons but most would agree that it’s a love of the outdoors and the ability to test oneself. The original poster asked a legitimate question and if I were an outfitter I would try my best to execute on a deal. Everyone here has different means and certainly different hunting experiences. We should really try and support one another a little more and judge a little less...
