Hi Sticks, welcome to AH. This is the place to answer all your safari questions. Your 300 WM will be great in Africa, I recommend 200 grain TBBC bullets, they shoot one hole in my 300 WM and worked great for me in Africa.

Sticks, my son Art Lambart II and I are dealing with similar "recoil" issues for his 8 year old son. I had a 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser cut down for youngsters. It sports a muzzle brake and a short LOP using a laminated stock. The lad hasn't shot it yet but we are hoping that it proves to be "tame" enough for him. With an iron sighted 22 the kid can "hold his own" on pop cans at 25 yards.

Welcome to AH Sticks. As you’ve already seen, tons of great info and help
here.
As far as guns go, I think Shootist 43 has it about pegged. A lot of game is in the 500#+ category: blue wildebeest, kudu, zebra, sable, eland. Waterbuck and gemsbok are only slightly smaller and are tough.
A .300 mag will do all of your PG, including eland. A 30/06 will work as well, in fact an ‘06 was one of my rifles on my last safari, but a. 300 just has that “little extra” trajectory and energy. Also, since you already own .300’s, you’re all set. Just remember, it’s all about putting a good bullet in the right place.
Take your .270 as well for some of the smaller critters . If you’re loading it with a good 150gr, it would suffice for everything but eland if the opportunity / need arises.

I did something similar with an M77 in 7mm-08. I had the LOP cut to 12.5" and the barrel down to 16" with an AAC muzzle brake. It works well enough, but it's awful heavy - esp with a can on it. It's a cool looking package, though.

Thanks for your reply! I'm looking for a plains game hunt to include kudu for certain, but am flexible on the others as I'm learning more about each huntable species. Yes, Namibia is actually at the top of my list right now.

Good morning SticksMcKinley,

And welcome to the best forum in the world.
There are many excellent Safari Companies to look at here, including of course the one I work for LOL, (Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris, Namibia).
Our main concession is in the mountains of northern Namibia.
It’s not game fenced and consistently produces excellent kudu hunting, as well as migrations of hartmann’s Zebra, oryx/gemsbok and such.
There are also multiple other species there in abundance that are not migratory.

The Khomas Hochland Highlands (where we are located) is not technically a desert.
There is plenty of grass and there is standing water year around up there.
We even offer Egyptian goose hunting.

As for rifles, I agree with Shootist43 in bringing your .300 Winchester with 200 grain Swift A-Frames.
We also offer rifles in that caliber (other calibers as well as shotguns for goose, Red Bill Duck, guinea fowl and grouse) for rent, if you decide you’d rather travel light.
Either way, you and your family will be truly amazed when you see Africa.
