USA: Help On A Black Bear Hunt Prince Of Wales Island Alaska

1) as stated previously, get ahold of local fish and game. Ask specifically:
- what is the typical peak week for spring bear activity. In PWS this is the week of May 10. I suspect it is earlier in POW.

Thank you very much for these tips. My lovely wife, Princess Bride, has a meeting to attend in Anchorage the last week of May. I am done with school on the May 31. I will fly up and meet her and we will do sight seeing, fishing, and most importantly scouting on POW. This time frame falls in the middle of the 4 week period that we are looking at hunting during 2020. I will come armed with your questions. (y)

If you want to really do it up, check out Nordic Tugs in Juneau. They used to charter bare boat and captained. It wouldn’t be that long of a run to POW on the inter-coastal and you would have a floating lodge to hunt from.

Looks like a great option, but their website indicated they didn't operate in 2017 due to health reasons and the website hasn't been updated since. If they still are in business though, looks like a great option.

I just saw that, sad. I used to wander down to the docks when I was in Juneau and drool on their boats.

Good morning.

My wife and I got the same good news last year and will be hunting POW in May this year. This will be my 3rd trip up for bear. We are hunting with my old friend who has been there many times. We do a self guided hunt and stay at a lodge that gives us a truck, access to a boat 3 square meals a day and a map of the island. Since the lodge manager isn't guiding he can't give any directions and you have to learn as you go. So our first couple trips we learned ALLOTTT.

It would be easiest if you PM me a phone number and we can talk as it would take some time to type up all the information, will also talk after our may hunt and give you some details on our hunt.

This is exactly what you need Jfet, local knowledge. Please be sure to call local fish and game. The difference in bear activity week to week can be striking. You want to get on them as soon as possible after they come out of their dens to avoid rubbed out hides.

With my reputation for tearing up canoes, kayaks, and duck boats this may not be a good idea. I've been known to put a hole in a boat by just looking at it.

POW is an assume place to hunt I will be back sooner then later. Unfortunately I don’t have place in mind to stay because we did a Yacht based hunt and it was 1st class but the whole time we were there I told the guys I hunted with, one was my son I would love to do the hunt on our own with another hunter or 2. I would never try it on my own at least where we hunted but feel that we could all be very successful hunting the area we hunted. We did see several fishing outfitters where we hunted and maybe able to stay at one of their locations and use one of their skif’s to cruise the coves and all the islands within POW. It’s a huge island so your need to pick an area and do your research I would go out of the Klawock and head out north along coast and thru those water ways. I good handheld GPS to navigate the waterways is a must. Haven’t stay there but Alaska Fish Tale Lodge is close to the heart of where I’d want to hunt. You’ll get wet every day so I think a tent is out of the question and yes no brown bear but these black bear are built like one so don’t go under gunned you want to stop them on the beach and grass because if you don’t it’s thick as a jungle right off shore way to many places to get lost in the cover and downed trees. As some have said already I would highly recommend Stainless or Cerakote rifle in a .300 caliber or higher. Our guides minimum was a .300 but at least one other is .338 or higher and one other I believe was .375. Son shot his with a 300WBY loaded with a Swift A- Frame 200 grain and mine was shot with a 375 H & H w/ Swift A-Frame 300 grain. If you decide on that area your welcome to contact me for some key areas around there and some other recommendations to the hunt. Good luck on your venture!

This I have seen first hand. Not to mention flipping sail boats.

Maybe the sunfish could make the trip.
