The 1884 hunt in "De Zuid Afrikaansche republiek"

hwl,
a 10% solution of either ballistol or soluble cutting oil in rain or distilled water will get rid of black powder fouling easily.
bruce.

10 % Ballistol & 90 % water mixed?

HWL

this 45-70 pedorsoli sharps 74 with 60 grs fff fine swiss black powder and a 405 gr cast bullet will shoot 8" or better groups at 300 yards. and I,m shooting with 75 year old eyes.

hwl,
yest that % is right for a black powder solvent.
another consideration is that many petroleum based oils can make a tarry substance in the barrel when used in lube.
vaseline is not like this.
natural fats like tallow, and natural vegetable oils are good, as is lanolin in the mix.

I'm curious, how the old voortrekkers clean their guns,....

HWL

I use hot water for the main flush and finish up with damp patches until clean from residue and dry and lightly oil, the cases go in to a jug of water and windex and when clean rinsed with hot water and air dried. the sharps 74 is very easy to strip and clean.

water is in fact the solvent for black powder.
buying fancy black powder solvents is in fact being ripped off.!
what ballistol does in water is to offer rust protection.
soluble cutting oils do this plus they have detergents that make the water wetter.
i am sure that boers, frontiersmen all over the world valued their firearms probably even more than we do.
if they had soluble cutting oil or similar they would have used it.
they also had sperm whale oil for oiling and lubing their guns, and this also was one of the best lube ingredients ever.
bruce.

Here in the colonies bear grease was a staple for the early frontiersmen. A good size black bear all fattened up for winter could yield 100 pounds of fat. In addition to being used for cooking it was rendered down and used as a general lubricant, rust inhibitor, water proofing, etc.

I am really looking forward to hearing about this year’s expedition and seeing all the photos!
