It is 1884 in the ZAR. The little Boer republic is 30 years old, recognized by the treaty of London in 1854.
Yes there was that unfortunate interlude of British rule from '77 to '81, but that misunderstanding was clarified at Majuba on 27 February 1881.
Now the flag of the ZAR is flying in Pretoria.

But that is all politics. On the farms around Pretoria some farmers are making ready for their winter hunt in the Waterberg about 100 miles to the north. Gert, Greg and Johan are from Pretoria district.
From the town of Nijlstroom come Herman, Hansie and Willie.
Then there is the Reverend Jaap from the kalahari-desert who is always trying to keep his countrymen civilized - even when they are out hunting.
There under an old camel thorn tree they camp with their wagons, and hunt for meat. They are joined by some friends from the southern sister republic - "De Oranje Vrijstaat" MC, Swannie and Max.
Among the Free staters there is David, a lonely Englishman from Bloemfontein - he has made the Free state his home and befriended the Boers - finding them quite hospitable. This year the group is joined by Georg, an Austrian-Bavarian adventurer hunting in Africa.
Then of course there are two hunters from the Cape Colony - Wallace and Clieve.

The area around the camp abound with Impala, warthog, bushbuck and kudu. Animals are hunted, carried to camp, and processed into biltong - dried meat- which will be taken back to their home farms.

The hunters use a variety of rifles:
The new 450-577 Martini-Henry, the most modern military rifle introduced to the British empire 8 years before.
The Westley-richards monkeytail - trusted rifle among many boers in the fighting at Majuba 3 years ago. Shooting rolled paper cartridges, it can be used as a muzzle loader in a pinch, should you run out of rolled cartridges.
Some boers stil prefer their muzzle loading percussion rifles, and one of them uses a giant 6-bore flintlock.
There is talk of a fancy 11 mm German turnbolt rifle that Georg will be bringing.
Wallace from the Cape brings a lovely bespoke gun - a handmade hunting rifle - the calibre i am uncertain of.

Members as you may see, we are the lucky owners of a time machine that takes us back about 130 years for a traditional hunt. This is the same hunt that gert Odendaal had been telling you about for the last four years.

For some or other reason Gert has failed to start a thread on this year's hunt, so I am helping him out.

I hope he will soon help us out with lots of photos.

Looking forward to this. It is always interesting to see the participants dress in period and camp like their forefathers! Good luck and hope to see many pictures!

I would realy like to go on a hunt like that, but there are so many hurdles to cross for it to happen. time, travel and housing before the hunt and getting back to catch a flight home.

a few of the deer I,ve taken with a flint lock.

Nice Lesley, what is the distance you have to get inside of with the flintlock?
We found that if the gun is rifled, and has a proper set of iron sights, 80 m is about maximum.
(My replica 1776 Brown bess, is a smoothbore, and only has a bayonet lug, no sights. With her you need to get within 20 m.
I was not successful yet.)

Looking forward to it! This is always one of my favorite threads of the year :)
You guys have fun and keep your powder dry! (y)

Have a watching brief on this thread to live vicariously through you fortunate gentlemen of the veld.

willie, with my .50 RMC flint with a 1-28 twist and 270gr federal bullets with 80 grs fff or 100 grs ff , from a good rest 100 yards is not to hard to make. with my .50 pedersoli blue ridge flint long rifle with a 1-48 twist with a round ball and 80grs fff its a solid 80 yard rifle. with my cap lock TC .58 big boar with a 1-48 twist I shoot a round ball with 100 grs ff and with the .575213 gr mini ball i shoot 90 grs fff and with the receiver sights the mini ball are good to 300 yards on targets, on animals 125 yards is max due to bullet drop. I have a TC 12 ga smooth bore I use on small game, 1-1/8 oz # 6 shot with 80 grs fff. I have three small caliber TC cap locks, a .32-36-45 that I don,t shoot much due to the increase in their value. I have been shooting BP since the mid 60,s. oh I have a ruger old army ss .45 revolver too.

Always good to see this way of life bought back to now.

Today, I had my first attempt with a black powder cartridge and iron sights,.... could not hit a barn door!

I hope you have elephants to hunt.....

:(

Georg, when hunting with open sights and black powder rifles hundred and fifty years old, your main focus being bush craft, all the game we hunt on this type of hunt is stalked within thirty meters and shot..this year particular the bush is extremely dense after good rains..you even need to get within twenty to thirty meters to make a one kill shot..that is the only way you will be able to hunt game this year..
Another technique is to find a spot where the Impala ram urinated, and scat ...you will find the impala ram within fifty meters from this spot, challenging other rams ..usually he gives you enough time to shoot it...forget about longer distance target shooting, focus on short distance shots..(y)(y)(y)

...and the rest of the day, I cleaned the gun, still not really done!

How to clean this thing in the field?

It had a bath in "Ballistol", gun oil of the imperial army since 1904,...hope this is old enough ;)

Absolutely marvelous! I do the same for our muzzleloader season. Alas, I am alone. Surrounded by inline rifles with scopes and the latest camouflage patterns. To have a group like yours is wonderful. Keep us posted and carry on!!

hwl,
a 10% solution of either ballistol or soluble cutting oil in rain or distilled water will get rid of black powder fouling easily.
