Buffalo hits hunter

OK, but it still does not show how he got himself so exposed

The PH is not the hunter. He does not want to shoot the Buffalo.

From the angle of the group (camera and hunter) perhaps the PH is trying to push the buffalo further down the brush line closer to his hunter.

It's pretty obvious, after listening to the comments in the video, that they had been chasing this bull for quite a while. Approached and bumped multiple times.

When the bull actually hits the PH, the Buffalo is pushing through the bush to do so.
Much easier to see in slow motion.

OK, makes more sense

i don't think video was from a drone, there were guys on the ridge behind the PH that took the video.

also, it did appear that the PH was sneaking up on the bull from behind the brush and peeking out, not sure why he ducked back in behind the brush BEFORE he shot.

a double would have been nice so one could afford to fire earlier in the charge and have another one just in case.

caliber: 458 lott or 458 3"?

one of the great things is we (the armchair quarterbacks of the world) can look again and again and hopefully learn something from this encounter. i suspect the PH that was struck sure did!

it was amazing that it did not turn out worse than it did, although i believe after the initial adrenaline wore off, the ph seemed to be hurting pretty bad just from being run over! at least that is what his body language said as he gimped toward the chopper and had a buddy help him put on a jacket.

i bet that is why @IvW is pretty stoked about having his 500 nitro's and 500 jeff's!! at that moment, bigger IS better. was also handy that there were not more hunters there in the line of fire to have to worry about shooting each other or getting out of the way!

I think I'll start shooting earlier in the Buffalo's advance.
I understand the temptation to be a critic after the fact, but Mr. Brickburn's comment seems bang on to me.
The only thing I would add, is fire & movement...

I will make a few comments. I know none of the individuals in the video.

Hunting for the sake of getting video footage for TV shows is something I hate with a passion as hunting ethics and respect for the animal hunted more often than not goes out the window. I know I have been there done that on numerous occasions, two individuals who still do this I refuse to ever hunt with again although being asked to do so on more than one occasion...What I can assure you is that what you see and hear on many are not what happens or happened on the ground....

Once any animal is wounded the main objective should be to get the animal dead and on the ground as soon as possible not only to minimize any suffering to the animal but also to ensure the safety of people involved. More so when the animal in question is a member of the DG gang.

The hunter is a poor shot not only with a crossbow but also with a rifle....

After wounding the buffalo he should have left the crossbow and taken a rifle to help sort out the mess and get the bull dead but no need to carry on and on and try and get another shot with the crossbow...for the sake of footage and sponsors...he could easily have finished the bull himself with a rifle before the bull runs off after they sneaked up so close while he was lying down(then again maybe not after seeing his shot on the second bull), but at least it would have avoided one person nearly getting seriously injured or killed.

This is also why the PH gets himself in trouble instead of finishing the job..footage instead of concentrating on the task at hand.

Wrong bullet choice for follow up on a Buff that has been wounded by a crossbow. Round nosed brass solid punch a small caliber sized hole causing very little damage and having zero immediate effect unless the brain or spine is hit solidly(excuse the pun). If it has to be a solid a meplat or coned solid(hydro). Best bullet to use would have been one such as a Rhino which will expand to 2.5 times the bullet diameter and cause maximum destruction even if the spine or brain is missed.

The hunting party are off to the left and he appears to be wanting to distract the bull or get him to move to give the crossbow hunter another shot, which is a ridiculous idea to start with...especially after it has been wounded and chased around for so long...

If he had a tracker with him(the tracker probably had enough brains to not go with) he would not have gotten himself into the wrong position to start with. He gets too close, he gets what appears to be slightly downhill etc..

He should have taken the first shot when the bull was looking at him and standing still(the objective obviously was not to kill the wounded bull at the first opportunity but rather to get footage for the video camera and another shot for the crossbow...), which would have given him ample time to reload and fire a second shot if at all needed(he could have finished it with the right bullet and shot placement right then). Looking at it again a competent hunter with a rifle would have been able to get off three shots if the first shot was taken when the bull was standing....the video starts after the bull is in motion....

Why he moves to the right after initially raising his rifle I do not know(video camera footage again...), but this action and movement on his part accelerates the charge-mistake...

By the time he eventually fires the shot goes way too high and left, through the horn, with zero effect, it does turn him,...not sure how many charging buffalo he has stopped but that is a very typical mistake of inexperienced hunters when action is fast, shots go high...

This is a very typical mistake when trying to brain a charging buffalo, slow the short clip down and you will see that he pulls the trigger just after the bobbing head has started it's downward path and the bull has on that motion decided to lower his horns ready for engagement, this results in the shot going high and too far left(going through the right horn). I am almost sure that if he did not pull the trigger when he did the bull would have hit him solid on. Pitty his aim was off.

Then they show it over and over again...

Then we get to the second bull...

Standing slightly quartering to and he gets the first shot almost in the arse....just ahead of the back leg!!!! Luckily the third

Piss poor and un-professional performance all round on both buffalo.....

Glamour boy's not hunters...unfortunate but reality. My opinion on what I see on the footage.

@1dirthawker

Yes, the 500 Jeff and the 500 NE are devastatingly effective with the right bullet and shot placement..

Like they say in drag racing, "There is no substitute for HP", in Professional Hunting, as long as you are competent with that HP and the rifle, the same rings true.

Was the bull wounded? It appeared no shot was taken on the first stalk (hunter makes a comment about getting within 20 yards and would've been a done deal with a rifle, but not a crossbow). It looked to me like the PH went around to try and get the bull to stand and get the hunter a shot - though that could just be some editing. Maybe I just missed it.

Either way, don't know who would think that is a great idea.

My understanding is that it was wounded.

If it was not wounded it would have been even more idiotic.....and costly, either way he is very lucky to walk away.....

I never saw or heard anywhere that there was a crossbow bolt in it either. It appeared to me that the PH was trying to move the bull into position for a crossbow shot. If it was already wounded then the PH should of been shooting far sooner.....

Interesting and educational video.

Enjoy Brickburn and lvw's color commentary. I haven't seen the entire video, just the charge.(Assuming the buff has not been wounded when he charged) I would agree the ph doesn't seem like he wants to "buy" the buff by causing first blood and waits way to long to pull the trigger. If shot when the buff starts the charge, the ph could have had at least two shots and probably more. Especially if he staggers the buff with a shot or two.

Also agree that a hydro type solid would cause much more damage than the one used. An A Frame, TBBC, TSX, etc. would also be way more debilitating in this situation. None of these bullets would have a problem traveling to the CNS if the shot had been accurate.

The PH is fortunate the buff didn't get a hook in. As the PH said. "The Lord has looked after me today".

And if it was not wounded he should never have been and gotten into that situation to start with...who the hell tries to herd Cape buffalo, wounded or un-wounded...(The folks hunting for the sake of TV footage and sponsors?...) I wonder what his daily rate is...

When the buffalo gets up and moves off from the position where he is lying he does not look healthy, before the charge situation and with the circus that follows I can only assume that it is wounded.

I wasn't very impressed with the shows host either! He just at least in part caused a PH to get mowed over and then carries on hunting for another Buff. His statement "we only have a day and a half left" says a lot for his character. And no one has to say much about his quality of shooting on the 2nd Buff. I don't have much respect for most "Hunting Show" hosts.

Personally I would not want to hunt with this circus.

Despite all the mistakes the worst part is that after the bull downs one of the PH's, they keep shooting and going after the bull instead of first checking on the condition of the unfortunate guy on the ground....even though the bull poses no further threat and is moving away...then again who knows what they edited...

This is often the cause of people dying..

Timelines, footage and other agenda's getting in the way of somebodies life?...

Idiots...

I agree with lwH about the filming and continuing to hunt as well as shooting the buff before checking on the downed PH......

I was a bit confused when I first started watching the full video. There seemed to be a never ending parade of people and equipment on that hunt.

Also notice they treat the incident as "lucky to to be alive." Which no doubt is true, but there is no discussion of what went wrong and more importantly why. They treat the indecent like a car wreck someone had on the way to work.

Normal for these TV hunts and it invariably leads to problems, more so when DG is involved.
