As the title says, I am interested in finding a used bolt gun chambered in 505 Gibbs. Specifically, I am looking for a "working gun" moreso than a showpiece, or collector's piece. I intend to shoot it, regularly.
Thank you, in advance, for looking.
Please PM offers
Michael

Newly reformed.....and fully delivered, but only from the "BR" part, not the 1,000 yard part. That one's in there pretty deep.

Are either of these two for sale, and actively seeking a new home in central KY? To be properly cared for and fed by a newly reformed 1,000 yard benchrest shooter?
No, just letting you know they do come around now and then, but can take time.

Does the bolt have to be CRF? Would the .500 Jeffery be an acceptable substitute? Because the Sako Brown Bear at $2498 seems like a good deal.

Thats a valid question, Sir, and should warrant a simple response of, Yes, of course. However, for me, it would not. I've wanted a 505 for as long as I can remember, certainly well back into the mid 80's. I have owned several "economic substitutes" along the way. Many of which were very solid rifles. I wouldn't begin to go down the road of arguing the ballistic or terminal advantages of one vs the other, it's just what I want. No real reason other than that.

Why not just buy a new MRC or CZ? There is a Granite Mountain that was stocked by HCR for 7500 on Guns International. Several others on there for more money.

I can totally understand. I've also felt more "affection" for the .505 than the .500 Jeffery and I can't even say why! Perhaps it was reading John A. Hunter's book as a teen. (He used the .505 Gibbs with great success until he could afford a double and then switched to the .500 Nitro Express.)

Or maybe it is the rebated-rim design of the Jeffery, a design which I've never liked.

But I have to say, unlike you, I would be willing to compromise and go with the Jeffery and getting it in a Sako would be a real plus.

Yeah. I grew up reading all of John Taylor's books. Had a custom 460 G&A #2 in my early teens. Ever since, been hoping to come across a good used 505. Hasn't happened yet.

Although, at the same time, I am also aware of the reality that I'm unlikely to put $5k or more in a rifle again. My last 300 WSM was capable of putting 5 shots into less than 2" at 1,000 yards and I only had about $4,500 in it. It put 10 shots in 5" at the World Open this past year, and that was in very poor conditions. My 260 would go slightly smaller, in good conditions, and it was also less than $5k.

Of course, that's not entirely apples to apples, but applicable nonetheless.

I've read on more than a few threads now where guys are referring to having a 505 Gibbs on the Ruger RSM. Can someone share with me the name of the builder (s) doing this work?
Thank you
Michael

Talk with JD Jones of SSK Industries. I bet they could do whatever you wanted done.

If you want a .505 Gibbs and are okay with a single shot the Ruger No. 1 is an option, one less costly than a RSM conversion. SSK could definitely do the work.
I'm confident SSK could do the bolt action conversion as well. They specialize in big bore rifles and handguns in general.

Quite likely they could. The only reason for mentioning the Ruger No. 1 is to save cost (if a person simply wants a .505 that goes "bang", something to play with at the range and maybe take on an occasional hunt).

If you're interested in a No1, there's a guy on Youtube that has a bunch of big bore Rugers that he shoots on video. I believe his name is Avi. Just look up big bore Ruger No1.
