If you need a camp gun for large animals, this might be the one. I bought this recently on AR and decided to pursue a different project. I haven’t fired the rifle. Military 98 with thumb cut, C-ring breach. New barrel chambered in 416/338 (416 bore on 338 Win Mag case - almost identical to 416 Taylor but the shoulder is a couple thousands forward). Includes reloading dies and expander plugs to open 338 cases to 416. I don’t know the make of the barrel. It is in a Ramline stock. Gunkote finish. Military trigger and bottom metal. There are some pits on the receiver below the stock, which are covered by Gunkote. The wing safety does not engage because there is no corresponding recess in the striker.

$495 shipped to an FFL in the lower 48. Email to jeffreydavisphd at gmail dot com with any questions. Thanks.

a long shot.. but... you wouldnt be interested in any trades would you?

I have a soft spot in my head for Ruger No. 1 rifles!

REDUCED TO $450 shipped to an FFL in the lower 48.

I know this is not the best time of year to sell a gun. So here's a price reduction and a couple of possible trade ideas.

I could use a Leupold score with an adjustable objective for a rimfire. A 4.5x14 VX3 would be ideal, I'd add a little case for that. I'll consider other Leupolds with the AO, +/- cash depending on the scope.

I'd also have an interest in a Ruger Vaquero in 357, blued, no bright stainless (I can't see the sights on those at all!). I'd add cash for that. I'd love to have a Colt SAA (also 357), but the $$$ gap is too big.

Living in CA, the only handguns I can be certain are ok to send here are single actions.

For anyone interested, I’m guessing that it’d be a simple thing to ream the chamber to .416 Ruger, if a factory offering is more appealing. A gunsmith could do so for less than $100.

That's something I had considered, but decided to pursue another project. Seems like it would be an easy rechambering task.

Excuse a dumb question, but if the Taylor cartridge shoulder is only 3 thousands shorter on the neck, wouldn't that be in the tolerance of the chamber?

If that’s a dumb question, I must be dumb as well, because I wondered the same thing. The spec I provided is based on drawings of the two cases. It certainly seems like 416 Taylor ammunition could be fired in the gun without any problem. Especially since it has a belt for head spacing as a back up. Maybe the cases would stretch a little more when resized? I don’t have any 416 Taylor Ammu to try, however. Regardless, it includes the dies and expander plugs. If you have 338 cases, it’s easy to make ammunition for this.

i dont know for certain @lil 2 sleepy but that sounds right... hopefully one of our gunsmiths will chime in..

the 416/338 and the taylor headspace off the belt and use the same parent cartridge.. based on the little I know about the two, I think the taylor would fit in the 416/338 chamber and would be safe, etc.. whereas I dont think the taylor would fit properly in the 416/338 (shoulder too far back)....

I have a new Leupold vx3 in the safe. I think it's a 3.5-10 I'll have to check for sure tomorrow

If the chamber dims I’ve seen are correct the shoulder of the Taylor sits about 0.055” ahead of the shoulder of the 416-338. Given this, I wouldn’t expect the rifle to chamber a .416 Taylor. A reamer would fix that in a hurry, though.

Interesting. I was told that it was the other way around (that the Taylor was the shorter of the two), but I have no idea if that's right.

How about a nikon monarch ucc 6-20x44 with adjustable AO?

I'd consider it, I'm more familiar and comfortable with a Leupold though. Looking at the sold auctions on eBay, looks like I'd need some cash in addition to the scope. Probably best to continue by email if you're interested - jeffreydavisphd at gmail dot com

Today I went to the range and fired a round to see how the case would look and measure dimensions (see CTDolan's post). I discovered there's a problem with this chamber. The shoulder has a clear grove or step. Not good. This needs to be rechambered. 416 Ruger seems a likely candidate. I believe in full disclosure and would edit out the post till this is sorted out if I could.

I have the Leupold you're looking for, but I am a lefty. Still tempting.

A .416 Ruger reamer would sort it. You can rent reamers and, if you're feeling up to it, could easily ream the chamber by hand (or, take it to a gunsmith and have some NECG sights mounted at the same time, and have him give the rifle a good looking over while in the shop). Stamp the new caliber on the barrel and take the rifle hunting!
