Thanks Phil that's all I could see I thought maybe I was missing something.

I don’t understand, if you bring your minor child into the country with you, you currently have to bring both the child’s birth certificate AND the passport?
The article says that lots of people can get a passport for their child but not a birth certificate, is this true?

The short answer is yes, you need more than just a passport. Exactly what you need depends on your circumstances. At least that’s how it’s been for few years now.

It would seem to be returning to before where a passport is all that will be required.

I don’t understand how this truly makes this easier for tourist. At least in the US, a Birth certificate is needed to get a passport in most cases. There are exceptions on the books, but those are rare cases that almost do not exist anymore.

I am surprised that there is a huge group of people wanting to come to South Africa, who are affluent enough to travel internationally, that have minor children who do not have birth certificates.

It wasn’t intended to make it easier for tourists. I believe the intent was to make things more difficult for trafficking of minors for the sex trade. Unfortunately for unaware parents, it meant being denied entry to RSA for their vacation. So they went back home not having spent their tourist money there.

But rescinding the policy back to passport only will make it like anyplace else and easier for parents traveling with their kids.
