What a sad set of circumstance! Nature can be really cruel at times.

500 Buffalo drown

At least 400 Cape Buffalo died in a stampede in the Chobe River last night in a desperate attempt to escape a pack of lions close on their heels. Environment ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda confirmed the incident and said MET staff are at the site to investigate and begin removal of the carcasses. Simone Micheletti of Serondela Lodge, situated near the site where the incident took place, told Namibian Sun that it is believed the panicked herd of buffalo tried to cross the river from Botswana’s side to reach the Namibian shore to escape the lions snapping at their heels. He said the spot where the buffalo tried to cross was unfortunately filled with several high sand banks, forcing the animals into a narrow funnel where they trampled each other and drowned. He said staff and guests at Serondela lodge could hear a large number of lions roaring in the area last night. It is likely he said, from a visual scan of the incident area, that as many as 500 animals drowned. Muyanda said the final number of dead buffalo will be confirmed at a later stage but that some carcasses will likely already have floated away. He further explained that staff are still considering how to remove the carcasses but that they will likely be burnt as the most preferred method of disposal.

Oh wow

I expect crocodiles, buzzards, hyenas, and lions would do the cleanup for free.

Not to belive.
There's not that much scavengers to get this clean.
Senseless dead is always sad.
But some kilo of meat the people could still get. After all.

Very sad indeed. It amazes me how we as hunters can feel sadness for the animals we hunt when seeing this type of situation. There is none crueler than mother nature at times.

That is amazing. Good to see some people salvaging meat. Would love to hunt lion or croc around there in the near future. Agree with Johnny. Mother Nature is a cruel bitch.................FWB

Unbelievable that they wouldn’t face the lions, but just ran over each other!

Herd mentality loses every time.

I’m with you in that it’s good to see people getting meat!

Good call Foxi, maybe some simply can't fathom that 500 animals weighing a grand equates to a half a million pounds ?
Oh well.

Good post.

What a waste. Crocodile feast.

500 Buffalo, should have turned around, and charged the Lions. I like the odds.

That must have been a "Red River" stampede.
Lions are incredible animals underestimated by many.
I've seen herds of elephants that are turned upside down, just because a few lions were lying on their path.
We once followed three old buffalos who got us and joined a herd.
I filmed with my cellphone how they came across lions and immediately, almost in panic, turned around. 150 buffalos ran past us at a gallop.
If you stand there coincidentally in their way - good night.
(Unfortunately I am too clumsy to upload this here.
The file is too big it says here :-(

Same thing happened in the south of KNP a couple of years back. Mother nature has her own control settings

Helluva way to cull a herd. Lemming mentality. At least a lot of the meat got salvaged.

In the early 1980's, there was an incident in Canada where Hydro Quebec discharged too much water from a dam, right about the time of the caribou migration. This resulted in many thousands of caribou being swept down river and over some falls. I remember reading about this in a Sports Illustrated article. I found a link to the article but unfortunately it doesn't have the photos that was part of the article. Imagine a pristine wilderness lake with thousands of dead caribou floating.

Nothing like North Carolina after a hurricane when pigs get washed out into the abermarle sound.

Them pigs float right nice once the sun hits them.
