ZAMBIA: 2018 Hunt With Strang Middleton In 2 Different Areas Of The Country

Day 8........

It's cooler this morning than yesterday, mid to high 30's. I barely have enough clothes for this type of weather . Anyways after breakfast we head out about 7:00. Come across a herd of crawshays zebra rather quickly. Zebra happens to be on the list for one of us, so we start the pursuit. The cool thing about this zebra other than its another subspecies, is that there are no shadow stripes. Well this is a Mike portion of the hunt, so I wont spoil it.

Later that morning we are in pursuit of bushbuck, sable, impala, who knows what else. We see a fair amount of game but no dice. Back at the lodge Strang says he is not feeling well as suspects malaria. He didn't feel well yesterday and this morning he was feeling bad. We rest till about 3:30, hoping Strang can feel somewhat better with rest. We aren't able to see any sable like we did the first day. Around 4:30 we spot one laying the grass, Strang looks him over and says he's good but still young with lots of potential left, so we move on. About 15 minutes later I just happen to turn my head left at the right time, and spot another Sable laying in some taller grass. Strang looks him over and says lets take a closer look. So we drive within 50 yards I'd say and the bull just lays there playing the you don't see me game.

Anyways we back out after looking him over, its confirmed that he is the bull we talked about yesterday, and we have found him again. We get out and put a stalk on, the bull is looking the other way and the wind is in our favor, so we go unnoticed. We get to a tree where I have a good rest and play the waiting game. After about 5 minutes the bull finally gets up, but instead of standing there he bolts. Thankfully he doesn't go too far, maybe about 30 yards into some cover. The cover has provided a lot of shade and with that Jet black coat, I can't see him in the scope. Once I do see him, I realize there is no shot anyways with a big branch in the way.

He stays put and we tip toe over to another small tree for a rest. He in turn tip toes deeper into cover :(. So I go alone to the next tree that will provide a shooting lane and he remains in place thankfully. I brace the rifle against the tree best I can with no actual branch to rest it on. The shot is broadside at I would guess 75 yards. Calm down and breathe once then squeeze... bang.... was it a hit? I see him running away and I ask did I hit him. The trackers and Mike were back at the truck and had a clear view of the goings on. I look back at them and they say he's down!! Whew!!!

I have been in awe of these animals in all the pics I have seen over the years, but to come up on one is awe inspiring!!! Really cool flare to the horns and polished bases!

Sable are just so handsome and you took a really fine looking one! Heavy horns!

Awesome sable!!!

Day 8 continued.....

After loading the Sable and getting back to the lodge, we get cleaned up and head over to the house. Strang is out of commission and his wife has left for the day and wont be back until tomorrow. He asks if we are able to handle dinner, specifically hartebeest back strap steaks. Sure thing, so I go to cutting a few steaks off and get to work on the grilling! By the way Lichtenstein hartebeest is fantastic!! We eat and have a few beers and head back to our chalets early to let Strang rest.

FANTASTIC Sable and congratulations!

I'm drooling looking at those steaks!

Judging by the juice on the plate you cooked them as well as you shot.
Nice job. I wished I could have a taste.

Super nice sable! Congratulations. Those steaks look pretty awesome too.

Thanks for the sable comments guys, I was and still am really happy to be able to take a sable like this!

very nice ! I will be posting sable pics soon myself :)

Very pretty sable. The steaks look like fine eating to me. Congrats.

Very nice sable!

Ah yes!! Absolutely beautiful animals!! Well done and once again congrats,! At this point if you don’t do anything but lounge around for the rest of the trip it’s been more than successful.

Day 9.... Lunar Eclipse Blood Moon

Start off the day about 7:30, not a cool as yesterday morning. About 8:00 we get on some hartebeest, which happen to be on Mike's list, so we are off!! Good stalk on 2 bulls..... I'll let him pick up the story later.
I realize now I have failed to mention the hunting companions we had with us each day in the truck, Rigby and Blue. Rigby is an old man for dog standards, but he sure loves hunting! Blue is 4 months old and learning from the master. I bet you can pick out from these 2 pics which one Blue is...

Anyways Rigby loves hunting like I said, to the point where when hunters are in camp he stays outside their chalets to make sure he doesn't get left for the day. He stayed outside our Chalets each night, at least until he was sure we were asleep. And sure enough, when I came out every morning he was there!!

Here's a funny pic of Rigby from when we were back fro lunch one day, he got back in the truck and slept there for 3 hours until we left for the afternoons hunt, what a champ!!

Day 9 Continued (Blood Moon day)........

About 8:30 we see an old solitary lechwe bull. Lets backtrack a minute, after seeing countless lechwe every day, they were tugging at my heart. The afternoon prior, Strang and I had a conversation and struck a deal for an old bull. We had seen 2 or 3 that he would put in that class. I was excited and ready to go after one.

Ok picking back up, we spot a old lechwe bull that Strang immediately says qualifies for what we had in mind. Stop the truck and get out and put the stalk on. Strang still feeling really bad this morning, and says to me if this is a long stalk I'll have to stop or you will have to hold me up! Lucky for both of us it wasn't a long stalk, we bump the bull and he runs about 50 yards towards more cover. Get on the sticks and Strang says to be ready, as he will turn broadside to give us a look before running off. Sure enough that's what he did, squeeze... thump, Lechwe kicks like a bucking bronco. I quickly as if I need to shoot again and Strang says no need, that's a heart shot. Sure enough the bull makes it 20 yards and that was it! He whistles for the truck and we make our way over to the bull. Really old bull, which by the way I am tickled about, this whole trip we both have been able for the most part to take old post prime bulls/rams! The older I get the more important that it to me, and Strang says that's his goal on every hunt as well.

Ok back to the lechwe... he was blind in one eye, which maybe helped me out as the way he had to to to see us put him perfectly broadside, hey I'll take it!

We call it a morning at 9am... Nothing happening in the afternoon and that night we have pan fried lechwe!! One of the best game meats I've ever had no doubt.

Then there was that blood moon!!!!!

A lechwe too! Dang man!!! Congratulations!!!

Good trophy!

We were there during the eclipse as well and I totally forgot about it until just now! How does one forget that?
