This has the potential to be a big issue for many people. Cargolux are one of the biggest, if not the biggest, freight companies in the world - I’ve used them many times to get trophies home.

Fortunately, El Al still flies from South Africa to Tel Aviv, and from there to lots of places. I’ve used them in the past when Cargolux wouldn’t carry certain types of trophies, and they are first rate.

If I were South Africa, I would be very worried about this. If more and more airlines jump on this bandwagon - recall, many stopped carrying certain trophies some time ago - but this covers all trophies - my guess is that many hunters won’t hunt Africa, rather than hunt and leave the trophies behind.

It doesn’t matter that the CEO’s reasons for this are nonsense. Yes, if he really cared about the environment and wildlife, he’d inform himself. But this is really about business and the ability of the antis to mobilize the “hunting supply chain.” We’ve seen this in my former industry - oil and gas. They can’t stop oil and gas companies from drilling, so they go after the pipelines, the trains, and businesses for which the oil and gas industry is only a part of the overall business. Sad part is it’s working in many places, and it will work in hunting as well.

I've contacted them to see if this is some kind of fake news. ( I hope so)
This one could hurt.
If this causes shipping costs to escalate on the remaining options then I'll be taking pictures and saving the expense.

I've pretty much stopped bringing anything back anyway . . . no more room, and my wife's appetite waned a long time ago. So this is more for other . . . although there may still be room for that small LDE I hope to bag next year!

wow another step down a bad road. Cost is going to keep climbing that is for sure. Sad day

FedEx and UPS, plus SAA continue to fly trophies.

I wonder what the status or outcome was from the legal process, I believe it was Conservation Force filing against Delta, on the issue of being a "common carrier" and interstate commerce, etc.

Just found this:

Appeals Court Upholds Groundless Airline Trophy Shipment Ban
Mar 29, 2017
On March 20, 2017, a federal appellate court ruled that Delta Airlines can legally refuse to ship trophies of the Big Five as freight. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a previous ruling by a Texas district court upholding Delta’s 2015 decision not to ship lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo trophies as cargo on their flights.

The lawsuit was brought by Conservation Force, Dallas Safari Club, Houston Safari Club, Corey Knowlton, Campfire Association and the Tanzania Hunting Operators Association.

The appellate court acknowledged that Delta’s policy was based on public perception rather than science. The Court held that Delta violated no federal law in refusing to ship the Big Five, “even if the justification for that decision is the avoidance of adverse publicity.”

Although the ruling frustrates international hunters who legally hunt the five African species and wish to ship their trophies on Delta Airlines, hunters continue to have other choices to get their trophies home. Fortunately, some other airlines and shipping companies have never imposed such bans and others have reversed ill-advised bans on the shipment of trophies as freight. SCI members are encouraged to take into account Delta’s trophy ban when deciding whether to fly on Delta.

The whole thing is ridiculous and motivated by the uniformed public. I assume as long as SSA continues to fly trophies to the states where OK. Yes some may have to incur additional trucking costs but I think it’s a small price to pay. Ultimately I think things like this will effect the bottom line of the PH’s. Many will shoot less to save on shipping costs. Just an opinion.

Just use Turkish Airline, for me it was the cheapest to ship from JNB to Chicago.

That’s what my current shipment is coming on!

Dear Wayne,

It is correct that Cargolux released an official statement on June 5, 2018 announcing that we will no longer transport hunting trophies of any nature onboard our aircraft.

This practice does not align with the company's ethical engagements and policies. For this reason, we can no longer accept these shipment requests. Cargolux is committed to building a sustainable business model and this includes preserving the environment and its natural resources

Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards

Well, at least they got back to you, and quickly.

At this point, as with other organizations, hunters have virtually no influence.

This needs an intervention by a government official in a country to which they fly to get involved, and try to make them understand.

It occurs to me that hunters are often fighting these battles alone. Where are the governments which are impacted by these decisions?

+ infinity

If the government of the host country does SFA then we are helpless. The corporate reply shows their ignorance. Where is Namibia and their so called 'ban the ban' declaration? This is an ideal opportunity for education and intervention with a company that does business in the country.

"Cargolux is committed to building a sustainable business model and this includes preserving the environment and its natural resources"

If a cargo airline is really concerned about the environment, shouldn't they quit flying and burning all that jet fuel, creating pollution and CO2?

Liberal bull shit. Again completely uniformed! Where is SCI or DSC on this one?

Company operates out of Luxembourg. If you think Delta could care less........

I think all of you guys are correct--it will affect the PH's, it will impact shipping costs, many will take photos only---I also recently had a package from Turk. Airlines that shipped to Chicago for Dennis by way of the tannery--it was cheaper shipping than the last two through ATL on Delta!

So, Namibia and RDS say, support our conservation efforts or dont do business in this part of Africa.....

Too bad!

Whilst air line companies more and more implement ban on shipping of trophys, I wonder has anyone tried maritime transport, via container?
