Does anybody have trouble with the discover card which is also diners work in Africa. Neither my wife or mine would work there and now the taxidermist says it says it is a debit card when entering my info. I even notified discover ahead of time. Visa works. Is it the dualname thats messing it up.

You probably just need to contact the card company and tell them again you are authorizing a charge from Africa and in what amount. Then tell the taxidermy place to resubmit.

I called Discover and they said everything is approved on their end. I emailed the taxidermist to try again and if it don't work we Wil use Visa. I just wanted the air miles from discover. Me or Anita discover card has never worked anywhere in Africa and we always notified them.

Some times places only can take visa and mastercard and do not even realize they can not take other cards. Most do like taking American express or discover because they charged a higher fee.

Mastercard and Visa are king...all others are hit and miss but mostly miss.

The taxidermist had the option of taking diners which discover say is the same. When we were there last supper it never worked anywhere. Visa worked everywhere I will send them the visa info tommorrow for my buf

Diners Club in the USA at one time ran on the Master Card network, now they run on Discover Network.

Charlie, this man is from Kansas. Help him out and tell him to get a Delta (Amex) and United (Visa) card. He appears to hunt internationally alot. With proper planning, in a couple of years, he either won't have to pay for that ticket or pay at a steep discount especially if he flies for his work and IF he is going where these airlines go.

Have been told United Visa was the way to go and to put my farm expenses on it.

If you can use an airline card for your business expenses that is the way to go. For every day use, every time you or the wife put gas in one of your cars, use that card. Then when you do fly, even domestic, use that card on that airline if it goes where you want to go. IMO you do not want to use the card for any everyday items that you are not going to pay off each month. Have you a cheaper interest card for that purpose since airline cc's typically carry fairly high interest rates and a $100 to $200 annual fee. But in a couple of years, when you buy a R/T airfare to a hunting destination for half price or less, you will more than have paid for it. Most of these cards give you 50,000 to 60,000 miles for receiving the card! The ticket I bought to South Africa for my July hunt cost me $1174 R/T for a Delta comfort seat. Regular price more than $2400.

There you go Lenny put everything you can on the cobranded card and rack up the miles.

Sad thing is I should have been doing this since my first safari in 2012.

Yes you should have. I paid cash for gas for several years before a light went off in my head saying "what the hell are you doing"? Everybody I know buys gas!!!

Not to completely high jack the original posters thread but I felt this fits here.

Does anyone have a CC that they only use for international travel. I have contemplated taking out a card for my upcoming trip and leaving my current cards at home to guard against any potential fraud risk on them?

I use a travel Visa and leave my personal cards at home. Has a much lower limit than my other cards.

For what it’s worth I use a travel visa and never get charged for international use but have had declines because of higher than normal usage for fear of fraud even after notifying card holder. Simply call international number on your card for verification. Remember to chew their rear

I don't worry about the fraud. We have had our cards hack here in the US. I had one get used that I hadn't used for two months. They must have gotten into the card companies system. They just sent me a new one. Your not responsible for fraud charges but it does pay to watch your statements.
