Hello from Oregon!

The short story of this introduction is that I once looked at hunting in Africa as an expensive, wasteful and pompous experience.

The longer story is more complicated.

I was never really raised in a hunting family. We had firearms, but it was rarely that I went out hunting. That was usually relegated to birds, specifically chukar, hence the name.

I grew up, spent some time in school, and finally got a job. After talking with some friends, I became a bit more interested in hunting in Africa.

After talking with these friends, my mind was opened. I saw an economical hunt offered with plains game. I was able to see that the animal was not being wasted, that it went to the community. An entire buffalo was pictured from whole animal to meat for the local populace. That relieved my worry of waste.

As far a cost goes, it is hard to find hunts in the US for a single animal that compare to what I could find in Africa.

The pompous part I guess depends on the hunter.

I'm booked for the SCI show in Reno, and for a hunting trip to Africa (2019-2020 Namibia) soon.

Welcome to AH

Hood River myself. I happen to know a few guys on the OSP wildlife division that you have probably worked with. Garnered that from your post on the Or./Wa. poaching thread.

Welcome Chukar! You will find enough information here to make a well informed decision on the destination for your African Safari. Enjoy the planning process. Shout if you need help

I worked Wasco and Hood River Counties for six years. Have been in K-Falls for the last 12 or more years. Probably do know some mutual folks.

Welcome aboard Chukar. You sound like the kind of guy we are looking for. Open minded, but easy to convince that hunting Africa is not as expensive as most people think. What kind and caliber rifles do you own? Do you reload? I hope you enjoy reading about the exploits of others. There is a lot you can learn from them. If you have any specific questions, be sure to ask them.

Welcome, enjoy the journey.

The Africa specific firearms are a Rem. 700 in 7mm magnum, a Ruger Hawkeye African in 300WM and a Ruger #1 in 35 Whelen. The last two were picked up after starting this whole safari thing began rumbling around my brain housing group. I have some strange fascination with the #1 and am looking at acquiring some more as time passes. I also happen to have a little fetish with less popular calibers.

This process also pushed me over the edge and I bought my first reloading kit. I haven't spun it up yet but am looking forward to it.

This site has been a bounty of information. Reading the trip reports just makes me drool. Thanks to Jerome for hosting this campfire and thanks to all who have shared information!

I took a Sporterized 03-A3 in 35 Whelen on my first safari in 2016. That same rifle will be going back with me in July. I'd sooner use it than any of my 7mm Mags. or 300 Win Mags. My handloads squeeze just about everything there is to get out of that caliber without going overboard. Barnes says I should be getting 2800 FPS but in reality I'm getting 2748. pushing a 225 Gr. pill.
