Any recommendations on either would be appreciated, and if anyone has used AfricaSky's SAPS 520 assist service I would appreciate comments - good or bad. I stayed at the Afton in 2010, but I was traveling with the whole family (3 kids - including a 4 yr old - and more luggage than any sane person should carry) and I can't remember a thing about the steak, the room or anything else. I was so happy to get horizontal not much else mattered.

This time I'll be spending 2 nights in Joburg on the way. I like having the SAPS 520 already approved, and the using the guest house to perform this service seems attractive.

Thanks

I stayed at Afton when I went but did not use the gun service. Being I was the only one on the plane that was a rifle hunter that worked out okay for me. Next time however, I will use the service.

From what I'm hearing Africa Sky is quite a bit nicer and I guess is in the same neighborhood as Afton so obviously the same time away from the airport.

Cannot speak to Sky but I too stayed at Afton and used their gun service as well in 2009, and was very pleased with the whole program including the pickup and drop off at the airport. And I remember the steak! It wasnt cheap but it was good! Breakfast was also good and plentiful, and it was very reasonable I felt. Would use it again.

I like Afton. Stayed there on all 3 of my hunts so far. Annelise does a nice job. Because I stay over night and have never had to rush out of the airport I have always just done the gun permit on my own. Over the 6 years that I have traveled through the Joburg airport it has gotten faster to get the permit. It took me longer to rent my cellphone from the cell store outside the gun permit area.

I have never stayed at Africansky, but have stayed at Afton twice and would book there again if I needed to overnight in Joberg

Stayed at African Sky Guest House this past October. They were at the airport waiting for us with SAPS permit when we arrived. They had a bus/minivan to ferry us to their Guest house. We arrived at 10:00 pm at night after travelling for 24 hours. They kept the chef on to make us dinner that late. Before we left they emailed us their menu and asked if we would like to prorder our late dinner.
Awesome service, clean and well kept premises and very reasonably priced.

Stayed at the Afton on my trip in 2010 and I would stay there again. Great service, nice rooms, great steak and a good breakfast.

Have use Afton before and will again in April this year. Using their permit help also this time. Always a good place to stay

I stayed at Afton House on my first trip to S.A. in 2011, and just returned from my second trip yesterday and used Africa Sky this time. Both B&B's are fine but I preferred Africa Sky for one primary reason: the meals had more variety and were a bit better than the steak I had when I stayed at Afton House. After the long plane flight and with the accompanying jet lag, I prefer a lighter meal than a chuck of heavy beef. Other than that both are excellent in their offerings.

By the way, if you stay at Africa Sky and they offer you the option of lemon cheesecake with some vanilla ice cream for dessert, DO NOT pass this up. The cheese cake is not the heavy cheese concoction I'm used to in the States. Their's is a light, whipped delight with a very lively fresh lemon sweetness. You mix that with the rich vanilla ice cream, well, it will ease you lovingly into the night. It would also be a thought to request it when you are booking your reservations. No kidding, it was that good.

I too ended up staying at the Africa Sky. Very clean and well maintained, food was great, grounds are beautiful, and they handled the rifle permit for me as well. The owners were very personable, and there were no people peddling jewelry and crap like we experienced in 2010 at the Afton House. Maybe this has changed since then, but it was annoying at the time. I would have to rate the Africa Sky higher than the Afton.

You would not make a mistake with any of these ! They are both great ! About the same time from the Airport ! African Sky is maybe in a little quiter area ! I suggest flip a coin ! They should both exceed your expectations !

I stayed at Afton in 2010. Very clean and the steak was very good, had heard stories about the food but I did not experience any problems.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
