Does anyone know ballpark about what one cost? Will SSK accept a Kimber 300 WSM as a donor action providing it works properly or Winchester only? I do like short barrel handy rifles and I'm at a crossroads. Put money into a CZ for AHR upgrade (no current issues with this rifle) or buy a B&M made from the action up. I do alot of mountain hunting and maybe this year in grizzly country, so a trim heavy hitter would be nice. Thinking something 416 cal on up. Thanks

Give SSk a call and they will be able to tell you and give you cost information and lead time on how long it will take to get your rifle back.
I have a 458B&M. @PHOENIX PHIL recommended to me a couple years ago. I had it built on a stainless WIN 70 action for a Alaska rifle.
It is a great shooting and handling little rifle that you can load anywhere from 45/70 to 458WM ballistics.

I agree with Dave, I'd give SSK a call to find out. If you don't hear something on Monday, let me know and I'll give Michael McCourry a call to find out.

Ok thanks, I was just looking for a ballpark idea on cost. Planned on sending them an email in next day or so.

Yeah sorry I can't be more specific. My .458B&M was bought from previous owner so I didn't go through the build process.

A 416 Ruger with a 20 inch barrel would seem to fit the requirement and cost under $1k. :)

For a bit more coin, there's an interesting listing on GB:

That is a nice rifle. I did forget I just bought a 375 Ruger last week that would work just fine. Put a few rounds through it and been at work since. I'm still interested in a B&M though. Seems like we all have an itch we can't get away from hu.

john.

Michael, the founder of B&M had some rifles for sale recently.
not sure if they all sold so he still may have some ready built rifles available.
you can contact him directly through the B&m web site or you are welcome to pm me and I will send you his contact details.

cheers.
Paul.

Even better if you could find one of the older Ruger M77 Alaskans with the hogue stock. They were cool little rifles and could probably be had for under $800 in .416 Ruger. My guess is that a majority of people who buy them do not fire them a lot. Recoil is pretty stout. I am one of those rare exceptions who has to load 100 rounds for mine and then burn them up over time so that I have an excuse to load 100 more:A Wacko:. I will say that the .416 Ruger is prevalent, available (components and data wise) and hits like a hammer. Loaded with 350 grain bullets it shoots just as flat as a .30-06 loaded with 180s.

For the money the Ruger can't be beat. Guess I just had my eye on something compact in 458 or 475. I emailed B&M and I'll see what SSK has to say when I get some time.

To resurrect this thread, I'm a lefty and have a lefty montana99wsm action id like to turn into a 416 B&M. Any thoughts or advice before contacting SSK?

This is a question for @michael458

It should work. I used a Montana action for my .500 MDM. They are clones of Model 70s.

BTW, this is what a lefty .416 B&M will look like with Bastogne walnut stock.

Good Morning Guys.............

@RLL Personally I think one needs to consider the objectives you have. Basically if you are considering buffalo, hippo, and elephant, then I would go the + side of adequate, and look harder at 458 B&M. If the heavies are not the full objective, and you have other things in mind, such as bear and what have you, then 416 is great. While 416 will do on the heavies, 458 will do a lot better in my opinion. Depends on your objectives and what you have in mind for the rifle.

As for the Montana Action, there should be no real issues with that, they seem to be well built and I think they will do a fine job for you. And as a lefty, the Winchester M70s are getting extremely hard to come by, and I would think the Montana is an excellent option............

Thanks for all the replies and feedback. I’m kinda stuck on the 416 idea but could be convinced to build/buy a 458 B&M as well. Cant have too many options depending on the task at hand! even a model 71 in the safe that’s dying for a conversion…

I’ve read your load notes extensively and noticed a wide spread in powder burn rates from Re7 to W748, Have you tested any other powders not noted on your site you might be able to share? Notably any slower medium burning powders.

Ive got a load of IMR4064 that looks like it would fit well within your burn ranges id like to try.

Thanks again,
Ryan

The RL 7 and H-4198 are mostly for the light weight bullets, in particular the 225 Raptors in .416 caliber.... Best performance, and lowest pressures with 300-350 gr bullets is with WW 748 and RL 15.

Have some good loads with AA 2520, IMR 4320, H-4895, IMR 8208......... But none with IMR 4064. You are correct, from the burn chart, I am sure we could work some IMR 4064 loads in....... I believe I have a rifle set up with a gage and could check some pressures without much issue.

Again, if buffalo + is a heavy consideration, more than one or two, then I would reconsider and move up in caliber.

I have a 458 B&M that I would sell if your still looking. Win. short action with a welded bolt. Action and barrel, a shilen match grade, are coated with what they use at AHR. The stock is AHR's fiberglass. I had a base made fore the barrel that takes a leupold delta point. It has a front sight but no rear. Was going to use a rear base peep sight if needed. This rifle is very accurate and feeds slicker than snot. I have Hornady dies as well. PM me if you are interested.

Until this guy posts something on pay it forward free I would avoid him at all costs.

If it hasn't sold by next week I might be interested. Stock would have to be changed along with some other items. I'm already having a 416 Rigby built so money is a tad bit tight.

Hey pal! I'll take all the .375 bullets if they're available.
Thanks!
