Bow Hunting in Texas

Still considering Texas as a place to retire. Thanks for the responses to information about living there (in Texas) in a previous thread. The follow-on question is regarding the reality of hunting in Texas, particularly bow hunting. I read the following, which is concerning and prompted this thread....

"I lived in San Antonio for several years. And unless you're willing to pay a minimum of 5k for a spot on a lease. You pretty much aren't going to be hunting anywhere within 200 miles. The norm is about 1 hunter per 100 acres. Bowhunting is very tough at best. So in a nutshell plan on spending big $$$$ and not a lot of success with a bow."

One wonders what the Texans have to say on the subject?

There are lots of successful bowhunters in Texas !! If San Antonio is your choice, it would actually be perfect for Hill Country or South Texas access. Yes, there are leases out there for 5K plus, most in S Tx although the Hill Country has also seen a rise in price, BUT there are more affordable places to be had, it just takes time and energy finding them. Texas is a big place and something will always come open. A friend of mine runs a 3,200 acre low fence bow only place in the HC with 8 hunters and they kill 150"+ bucks every year for 3K. I'm not sure of the successful percentage for bowhunters in Texas, but lots of deer get killed with a bow.

My neighbor is a bow hunter, he just obtained a lease right around Fredericksburg, I think he paid 2k per spot. It’s him and his brother. That’s about 65 miles from San Antonio. Yes you are going to pay top dollar if you want to go to South Texas and that’s going to be hard with a bow, unless it’s been cleared.

There is a George Strait song entitled "Amarillo by Morning." The chorus goes "Amarillo by morning up from San Antonio..."

If you google the distance it is an 8.5 hour drive. I have driven as much as 5 hours to get to my deer lease. Currently, I drive 184 miles from my home to the front gate of the 3BH ranch. The closer a deer lease is to a major city will also increase the cost. Getting off work at 4pm on Friday and driving 3.5 hours to deer camp is not a big deal in Texas.
