A 71 years old woman who went missing for almost a week at Samedupe village near Maun was on Sunday found dead after she was trampled to death by an elephant.
Officer Commanding for District No5, Senior Superintendent Peter Gochela, confirmed that the deceased left home to collect firewood on the 11th of February but never returned.
After she was reported missing, police dispatched a search party that found her decomposed body in a nearby bush.
“A pathologist had to be immediately flown from Francistown to Maun to conduct a postmortem on the deceased for her to be buried on the same day,” Gochela revealed.
The postmortem report confirmed that indeed the old woman was attacked and killed by an elephant.
“There are people who say the day the deceased went missing they heard someone screaming from the direction where she was found and we suspect that it was her,” noted Gochela.
The Officer Commanding however expressed disappointment that members of the public these days have lost the spirit of urgently responding to such instances lamenting that had they quickly responded to the deceased’s desperate call for help they could have possibly saved her life.
