In my defense, I didn’t bash the 404 J, I just bashed bullet availability of the 404 compared to the 416R. I also said if Kimber would chamber the Caprivi in 404J I would buy one the next day!

Toby458, that Dakota 404 Jeffery is a beautiful. At that price I'd prefer it over a new CZ 550 Custom knowing that it is most likely a better rifle. I hope that an AH member picks it up. Outside of these "hallowed pages" I've never seen or heard anything about that caliber. As far as taking it on Safari, if it were mine there'd be no doubt. That caliber was "born" to hunt.

It really does look like a decent deal. I've not really researched, for example a comparable AHR model. But this may turn out to be an outstanding good deal.

That is a beautiful gun and no doubt the Dakota is a great gun. With that being said my dad went to the DSC Convetion to buy a Dakota 404 Jeffrey and after handling the Dakota and the Heym, he bought the Heym in the 404 Jeffrey. There was in our opinion no comparison between the two guns. In my opinion one was like a Ford pickup and the other was like a Ferrari. Not trying to down the Dakota just thought the Heym was a superior firearm.

Try taking a Ferrari hunting! Give me the Ford, albeit a king ranch. Kinda like the farm girl and the prom queen, never worried about messing up the farm girls makeup.

There wasn't much difference in the price of the 2 guns we looked at, but the Heym was a nicer gun in my opinion. This only one persons opinion, both are probably out of my price range. This is the gun my dad bought not me. I personally carry a Kimber Caprivi in 375. There was only like $2000 difference in the two guns we looked at, but in my opinion there was no comparison in quality and feel of how the guns shouldered.

I do like the stock shape better on the Heym. It has a more British look to it. The wood to metal fit on the Heym and Dakota seem comparable. They both have great sights, barrel band sling swivel, and beautiful wood. So, I guess it all comes down to aesthetics more than anything.

I would take a Rigby London’s Best, if wishes were horses than beggars would ride. I think Heym builds an incredible rifle. I also like the stock design better on the Heym over the Dakota but at that price I would buy it if I was in the market for a 404. I could learn to deal with the thicker stock for the savings and apply it to trophy fees and a good single malt at the fire!

That's a great price on the Dakota. I have more than that now in my converted Model 70 since I had it custom stocked. If I were starting over I would buy the Dakota at that price (though none were around at that price when I started).

The Dakota African model repeater is essentially sort of a slightly enlarged Model-70 Winchester CRF, (with appropriately deep magazine in larger calibers).
Today's CRF Model-70, in .375 H&H, .416 Remington or .458 sells new for something a bit over $1,000.US dollars.
Conversely, the Dakota in .404 Jeffery evidently sells 2nd hand, for something between just under $7,000.US bucks to about $10,000.US, depending on embellishments, grade of walnut, etc.
One of my friends used to have a Dakota "African" in .416 Rigby and, it was a very fine hunting rifle.
But IMO, definitely not worth the price he paid for it (about half way to the price of a Heym double at that time).
