I recall that after "the war" my dads rifle was a Marlin 36 30-30, my uncles was a Winchester 94 32 Spl, which was considered a big bore. Then dad got a 30-06 followed in the early 60s with a 300 Weatherby in preparation for a guided elk hunt in Montana. I inherited the Wby in 1980 and it became my elk rifle. About 1983 the finish on the stock was beginning to get thin and if I continued to use it as the main rifle, there would be open spots on the edges of the stock. So I started seeking replacement options. these coursed through 338/06AI. 338WM and then to a "big bore" 375H&H. For several years this seemed as a reasonable place to stop in this escalation of power. After all, dad had gone from flathead Fords up through 352 cu in and 428 cu in V8s, and back down and had settled on a few Hondas as his last cars. So it did seem logical that there was an upper limit to desired power in rifles as well. But then in the course of building a long range rifle I had an extra 338 rebarrelled to 375 RUM and while it would work as a DG rifle, it was a little awkward for close range. Then there was the 458 Win Mag and the 404 Jeffery. I suspect these are entirely suitable as an upper limit to desired power, but I see grand double rifles listed on these pages chambered for such great cartridges as were previously considered outdated and unavailable British and German cartridges. So to put in linear form we have: 30-30; 32Spl, 30-06, 300Wby, 338/06AI, 338WM, 375H&H, 375RUM, 404J, 458WM - so what's next? 458Lott or Watts- or just go directly to 500Jeffery or one of those T-Rex killers? Is this a normal progression? or some obsessive magnetism that someday will revert to driving a Honda and using a 30-30?

Good way to document your travels through rifle calibers! I say try the 458 Lott next.

I started at 30/30 myself then 30-06 then 35 Whelen at which I stopped at for many years for some reason I started looking at 375 Ruger and joined this forum because there was a lot of information on 375 Ruger on here.
I started building my 404 Jeffery 6-8 months after joining this site.
As I’m nearing the end of the 404 I catch myself looking at my black powder mortar with 2.78” bore and wondering if I could get it in a stock.
It’s normal.

I think this thread very closely correlates to the "Big Bore Addiction" Thread. It is true! I started out with my first centerfire rifle being an old M1 Carbine. Which of course, as a17 year old was big hitting power compared to my little 10/22 international. But then... its sharp report became a little blase and that soon became a .30-06 then a .338, then I got my first .375 H&H winchester M70.... I thought "This a big gun!" Then I joined AH and realized it was a good starting point. Then I got a .416 and now I am looking for a No.1 to build either a .450 or a .470 NE off of. One day I will run out of bigger caliber rifles that can honestly be called sporting rifles and not field guns. :W Cal 50:

We are curious animals aren't we.

It depends on how old you are. If you are under 70 it isn't time to throttle down yet! I would be looking at a .505 Gibbs in a bolt action or a .500 Nitro Express in a double rifle.

I haven't been on this forum for very long, but here's my story. I was always of the belief that between my .22 LR, .22 WMR, .270 Win and a .300 Win Mag, I had everything in North America covered. I had few other rifles - among them a .375 H&H just in case I made it back to Africa for DG. Since joining this forum, I sold my .375 H&H (Browning, wasn't fan) and bought a New Haven Model 70 in that caliber. Then I figured that someday I may do a swamp buffalo in Mozambique, and it made sense to get a CZ in .375 and have Wayne up at AHR do a #3 with a synthetic stock/gunkoke, etc. Because, you know . . . swamps are wet. No clue when I'm getting to Mozambique, but I need to check that box. Plus, with climate change, Phoenix may turn into a swamp. Anyway, then a .458 Lott caught my eye, I mean it was a good deal and everyone needs a Lott. I didn't want to get caught like Jack did without enough punch, right? I soon realized that the Lott is pretty big, and I needed a .416 Rem as a nice medium to slot between the .375's and the .458. Now I'm thinking that a .505 is probably necessary to fill out that hole on the top end. I won't ever hunt elephant, but if a rogue stampedes through my neighborhood right now my family isn't covered without a .505 Gibbs . . . WTF.

Funny you should pick that age- I'll be 70 in September- so maybe I should move quickly on the search for a Heym .500NE before I start the inevitable downhill slide of health. but then, you know, since I've had that 458WM there have been no marauding elephants rampaging through our town, so it must be an effective deterrent- but then, there may be that big bull that isn't bothered by a mere 458 and requires that full half inch bullet to dissuade him.

Next step up, the .950 JDJ perfect for the Zombie Apocalypse.

We all run a different race, but seem to end up at the same finish line somehow..

I've been all over the map with hunting rifles and calibers.. my first "deer rifle" was an marlin 30-30, but the first rifle I hunted with was an old Italian 6.5MM carcano that I borrowed from my dad when I was a young teen.. I've owned 30-06, 300WM, 308, 7mm RM, 7 WSM, and a host of other rifles over the years..

I spent 40+ years hunting everything on the north american continent, never believing I needed a big bore, much less a mid-bore over 30 caliber..

I found this place about 2 years ago, and suddenly everything changed... Now I own a .35 whelen and a .375 H&H.. and Im looking at adding a .458 win mag to the arsenal this year...

I have no aspirations of hunting DG with any regularity... I intend on chasing cape buff in 2019.. and will do that with my .375 I am sure..

So why do I "need" a .458? There is no animal on "the list" that really requires it.. in fact most of what I will hunt over the next five years would likely be much better suited for one of my .308's or the .375... and Im actually not much of a fan of recoil and the loud report associated with the big boomers..

And yet I want one badly now..

Why?

"just because"....

I blame @cal pappas @Red Leg @matt85 @sierraone @CAustin @Shawn.54 and others...

you are all collectively a bad influence, and my wife hates what you have done to my wallet.... :D:D:D

Well looks like you have had fun with lever guns and Bolt guns. Well I see to parallel path's you haven’t explored.

Doubles first 9.3x74R, then 450/400, then 470 NE, then 577 NE.

Single shots 38/55, 40/65, 45/70, 45/120, 50/70, 50/90

That ought to keep you busy for a couple weeks

If you settle on a bolt just get a 505 Gibbs and a 50 BMG

Yes we are big bore devils making you have 458 Lott lust.
By the way I have one that could Be had for a very good price.

The bright side of owning guns is that it gives you a ready supply of computer passwords... you know, 3006Springfield, Sako270WSM etc. However I have pretty well gone through my collection so I need another soon, my work password is coming due to expire. I'm thinking .280Remington, or maybe 6.5Creedmore...

I used something of the same method for passwords and when I needed more I just changed the order, e.g. M70 270 Win would become Win 270 M70 or M70 Win 270.

It gets confusing when you mix them up just add a new one on the end.

Funny thread.

I will be 66 this coming September. Definitely circling the toilet - just a question of velocity. And @mdwest, you really need to move on to the good stuff --- double rifles and double shotguns - English and German (Ok a few Austrian and Italian things thrown in as well) - and did I mention that I love the French Darne?!?

My beloved spouse knows the auctioneer that I trust. After my son picks over the blunder, she will do pretty well on that investment. It is a fine madness and far cheaper and less bother than a blond mistress.
