JOHANNESBURG - Police in Limpopo are investigating after a 46-year-old man was attacked and killed by lions at a game farm near Hoedspruit.

It’s understood the man was attacked on Friday night after he left his tractor, which stalled a few metres before he could reach his compound.

Police say the man's body was recovered after the lions were scared off by gunshots.

The police's Moatshe Ngope says: “He walked on foot and subsequently a group of lions attacked him. At this stage, our investigations continue.”

A suspected big cat poacher has been eaten by lions near the Kruger National Park in South Africa, police say.

The animals left little behind, but some body parts were found over the weekend at a game park near Hoedspruit.

"It seems the victim was poaching in the game park when he was attacked and killed by lions," Limpopo police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe told AFP.

"They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains."

Police have not yet established the victim's identity. A loaded hunting rifle and ammunition were found next to the body, South African website Eyewitness News reports.

Lion poaching has been on the rise in Limpopo province in recent years.

The big cats' body parts are sometimes used in traditional medicine, both within Africa and beyond.

Wildlife charity the Born Free Foundation says lion bones and other body parts are increasingly sought-after in South East Asia, where they are sometimes used as a substitute for tiger bones.

In January 2017, three male lions were found poisoned in Limpopo with their paws and heads cut off.

A suspected poacher was reportedly mauled by lions during the weekend after police officers found a man's half-eaten body in a South African reserve.

The gruesome discovery occurred in a private nature reserve just outside Kruger National Park in South Africa, TimesLIVE reported Monday.

“The police in Hoedspruit outside Phalaborwa are investigating an inquest case after a 46-year-old man was attacked and killed by lions near Hoedspruit‚” Limpopo police said in a statement.

Police added: “His half lifeless body was saved after the lions were scared off by gun shots."

Police believe the man may have been a poacher since a hunting rifle was found nearby. Authorities are still attempting to identify the man and are asking any family members to come forward with information.

The wild lion population in Africa has steadily dropped in years, with fewer than 23,000 believed to be left, according to African Wildlife Foundation.

WOW. Poaching the wrong animal can get you DEAD.

It is hard to understand the dangers of getting stuck on your tractor and walking home. The head is part of the remains which should help the identification process. Seeing it and reading it doesn't make it any easier to comprehend. Those things are so far from most peoples everyday reality.

Was he a poacher or a worker?
I am yet to hear of a poacher using a tractor as a mode of transport, neither fast enough nor stealthy enough to be effective.

report i read said tractor driver was found safe ..his tractor broke down and he walked back...

If he was a poacher he got what he deserved. The next report will be the lion had to be killed because the lion attacked a poacher on the lions turf.... When you mess with Dangerous Game you are playing a Dangerous Game.

Before he knew it, the lions got him headed in another direction.
