Namibia, Canada,
Anyone use these for hunting with 375 H&H? I like the concept but worry about losing rounds during a stalk or generall hunting/traveling.

I would recommend a belt pouch type holder. The usually snap closed and are more secure.

Never lost a round from either the cloth and elastic slip on type or this slip on the belt leather type for big bore ammo:

The belt carrier with snap on cover should be more secure and I tried that years ago but it did not seem best for me.

I would think the extra weight (as part of the gun “package” would also help with a bit of the kick from a big bore. Seen any PH’s use them?

I’m sure belt ammo cases are more secure, but I hate having a heavy belt. Its also a pain getting in, getting out and generally sitting in a hunting car/truck with ammo on your belt. For me anyway.

That’s one on the underside of a 300 win mag. I have used it on five hunts with no issue.

I do for smaller caliber rifles and have for years deer hunting. For the big guns I use Murray Leather belt shell holders. They are brilliant. I have two so solids on my left and softs in my right and I’m ready for anything!

I've used my combo cheek rest/cartridge carrier (Allen universal) for 308, 7mm mag, 300WSM. hiked over some very tough terrain, through rough scrub, crawled and shuffled. Never had a single round move a mm.

I use the Allens on my hunting rifles. One glance and yep, I got ammo. For this old fart the belt unit is just one more thing to forget to pack, carry or remember which side of my body it is on. The buttstock one is a no brainer. I don't even take out the ammo when the rifle goes back in to the safe. YMMV.

Then again, you could go this route.

Philip, would you use a stock holder for big calibers if the Murray holders were unavailable for some reason?

Have you used them for 375's?

my old fart thinking as well. it is much harder to forget the rifle than a belt

don't own a 375 but for the life of me I can't see why it would be any different than anything else

I think the metal insert, buttstock carriers may add some "class" or novelty for conversation to sporting arms and may "seem" like a good idea but may not be very practical in reality. Any type carrier should be easy to carry, quiet and handy. I have used basically three types or combinations thereof for years. The elastic "Kolpin type", the belt pouch and the trifold wallet for carrying extra cartridges in a pack.

I wouldn't be any more worried about losing cartridges carried in the built in metal magazine style, as shown in the OP, than I would worry about a floor plate opening on a bolt gun- assuming the latch isn't worn out. I just don't think they are that handy or practical.

The elastic buttstock carrier holds 9, the belt pouch shown holds 5 and the trifold holds 12. All are easy to carry, quiet and handy. The cartridges shown are 450 Watts. All will securely hold most any size hunting cartridge. I modified the belt pouch cartridge carrier by adding a simple cover flap. It holds cartridges securely without a closure mechanism that might interfere with quick extraction at the worst possible time. :)

Sure it just may get heavy and make the rifle less balanced. .375 rounds are heavy as you know.
For a cheaper alternative to Murray Boyt makes a cheap leather belt ammo carrier that not bad. I just prefer the well made Murray products that will last a lifetime.

I also use the buttstock types for an inline muzzle loader and slug gun.

Gents,

We have following pouches available in our store from Small calibers up to Large African calibers.
For those who don't like to carry ammo on the belt we have a storage pouch for 20 bullets ideal to take in a backpack.
A stock pouch is also available at ELS and can be ordered on demand.

WKR,

FRANK
