For completeness to anyone wondering how long it will take from harvesting the trophies to getting them back to the USA:

6 December 2017 - approximately 5 months since leaving Africa - received word this morning from Hunters and Collectors that the permits are in order, getting closer to having the Dip & Pack process completed and shipped! Will be using Rex Freight and clearing with Coppersmiths in Chicago, final destination after the tannery will be @The Artistry of Wildlife where Dennis will have to work some magic on the Kudu.

Day 1 Continued:

I can't seem to let go of the Waterbuck quite yet, I can't get enough of the shaggy coat and the musky odor . Michelle heads back to the lodge with Graham and I ride with Louw to the skinning shed to watch the master skinners at work. I try to help by holding the light of my phone as they worked the cape down over the front shoulders and neck, this beauty is going to end up as a shoulder mount in our living room! I was probably more of a hindrance than help, but I felt like I had to do something.

Michelle takes a great shot of the last of the light as she was headed back to the Mpunzi Lodge. Clouds moving in, was the weather going to change? I hoped so.View attachment 193832

Louw finally pry's me away from the skinning shed and we head to the lodge as dinner is awaiting.

The smell of cooking pork chops over the hot coals made me realize how hungry I was!

The table was set and a lovely bottle of Dry Red South African wine adorns the table, it wouldn't be the last that night.

We talk about the days adventure and discuss the upcoming spa day again. After todays heart pounding stalk and harvest, Michelle doesn't want to miss a moment of time in the bush with me, to the point of contemplating cancelling the spa day!

Happy Independence Day everyone!

That's great. I was hoping my order would leave before the holiday shutdown but it appears that will not be the case as they are waiting for the permit from Limpopo. I hate the waiting part and honestly it should never take this long. It's a simple export permit a non cities permit to boot. That's Africa I guess.

I had already prepared myself mentally the shipment wouldn't happen until 2018, so this was a surprise! It's all about expectation management :A Thumbs Up:

Ya I guess so. In light of things going on in my life now this is meaningless. When it arrives it arrives.

Was it not part of the deal that Splitting Image Taxidermy had to have your crate shipped by the end of the year?

Yes it was. They are blaming it on no export permit issued by Limpopo authorities.

Thank you! Yes, we had a FABULOUS first Safari with @KMG Hunting Safaris and visit to Vic Falls.

I've now got the Africa disease something awful...my wonderful wife has to hear about Africa every single day!

Have her call mine, they can commiserate with each other. While we keep talking Africa, obviously.

I was going to say the same thing. Hell let’s get the three of them together and while they’re distracted we can sneak off Back to Africa.

@johnnyblues , @gizmo , @MAdcox

Guys, I've created a beautiful MONSTER!
I talk about all the different countries in Africa and show her pictures of new places and animals...then I get "honey, I want a Buffalo and a Leopard! Those Crocs are SO big, can we shoot one of those too? I also want a Warthog"

Getting the wives together, bad idea. I can't imagine the credit card bill that would result!

I'm not sure she will let me sneak off to Africa without her...
