300 H+H 220 grain round nose loads wanted

G`day reloading members,has anyone suggestions of what is/are some reasonable loads for 300 H+H using Aliant reloder 16 powder.

Reloders 16 is too fast for the 220 gr in a 300 h h. Reloder19 or 22 would be better, or a slower burning powder comparable to 4831

Could you add further to this please? I have a friend that has already purchased the powder for me and is about to go and load.

What are any perceived problems with actually using it in your opinion?

A further question how would the R 16 go in loads for 338 Win Mag?

Reloaders 16 is more for the short mags and a 270 type using lighter bullets. Using the 300 h h wth heavy for caliber bullets need a slower burning powder to realize their potential, R 16 is the wrong powder to maximize the caliber and 220 gr bullet. round. It may work for lighter bullets for the 300 h h with 150 gr or Possibly165 gr. Go to the alliant webpage and check the r 16 loading data. Better yet go to the Hodgdon web page and check the reloading section for better choices.

I had already done that and see that they have loads for 300 WM and 300 WSM`s and have seen where many suggest that 300 WSM loads will suffice for the H+H
Hey I have never reloaded and dont want to start and have to rely on what I`m advised,my bloke said "this is the best one for the job"

I am in no position to dispute him as I havent a clue ,other than what I can glean from the net.

If it were me, I would let your friend load and be the first one to shoot....he then could check any pressure signs. WSM loads are not similar to the h h....smaller case capacity normally requires a faster powder...larger case capacity normally a slower powder....larger case heavy bullet...equals in most cases sower burning powders reloaders 22 or r 25 would be much better. I shoot a 300 weathetby with h 4831, r 22, Norma mrp, or imr 7828

Ok how about the load he has suggested, it is 61 grains of the R 16 behind the 22gr RN

Without knowing how much actual knowledge he has on any of it I say again that "i have no idea" and am only going on what he has told me and that "its the best"

I`m starting to get cold feet over the whole idea of him doing it now.

Give it a try, but as I said earlier, let him be the first to shoot it and check for pressure, or a possible hang fire. I am very hesitant to shoot any reloads that I Personally have not landed myself......FYI ....stand back a few feet when he shoots. I can find no load data for the R16 and 300 h h

Havent used 16 but as mentioned the best choice is 22 and 25. I have used both with the 220 RN and they both shoot very well.

What bullet are you using? I’d always start with published load data by the bullet or powder manufactures.

Alliant publishes R22 in the link below for Speer 180 and 200 grain bullets in 300 H&H.

Yes ok to the alternatives BUT the man bought the R16 for me. Well picked it up,I paid for it of course.

I'm sorry. That does stink as I'm sure that powder and bullets aren't terribly inexpensive in Australia. I know it's not what you wanna hear but...you're probably not going to find legitimate data for RL 16. For one thing, the powder is literally brand new, so not much available even for the stuff it was designed for. and for another, it is all together too fast for a bullet that heavy. Below is a link to Nosler's load data. You really need slow powders for those overbore calibers. With heavy bullets. RL 19 is the fastest Alliant powder I would try with that cartridge and bullet combo. Generally the smaller the difference between the case diameter and the bore diameter, the faster the powder you can use. The inverse is also true. You need to slow combustion or the case neck starts to act less like a funnel and more like a fuse opening in a bombshell. I know your looking for data, but what Alliant shows is pretty much what's available for it so far. It's the only load data they have that's listed as "initial loads" meaning even THEY haven't fully worked it out yet.

Was looking at the Alliant site and they do list some loads for the .300 Win mag, but not for heavier than 180 grs. About all one can do is proceed with caution as with any untried powder and watch for pressure signs. While certainly not ideal, R16 might work OK with some experimentation. Alliant claims it is within the "4350 band" of powders, and 4350 is often used with the .300 mags.

Ok and thanks for your replies. I have just received this QuickLOAD V 3.6 DATA SHEET, thus can you members that are in the know run your eyes over them please and offer an opinion?

It seems kosher to my unpracticed eye but I may be missing something of importance.

I agree, RL19, RL22 or Alliants 4000MR would be much more appropriate but he has RL16. I am using QuickLoad and it is showing 61.0 gr - 89.4% fill, 2600+/-fps, 55464psi. RL16 is in the same burn range as 4350. Woodleigh lists H4350 from 59.0-64.0 with the 220gr RN in a 300H&H.

If you really want to use RL16 I would recommend starting at something like 58.0gr - 85% fill and work up until you see any kind of pressure sign. But realize you are in uncharted territory. Unless you or your friend are fairly experienced you may want to consider using something like ADI's AR2213. You can always email or call Alliant. They have been very helpful to me in the past. Also I presumed you are using Woodleighs, I would call them too but I believe you are ok. If you are going to be using Woodleighs then you should buy their reloading manual.
