so ive been hunting small and medium size game for years, and would like to make the jump to some bigger game animals( Moose, Bear, Nilgai, Buffalo).....

now i have rifles in damn near every caliber up to .375HH.....and i am more than confident .375 will take any game i plan on hunting.....but would i be better served with a .458 (or other .4xx caliber)? or would that be "too much" for anything in N.A.?

right now im leaning towards a CZ550 in .458

thanks for the help

The 458 Lott will take down anything walking. So will many other calibers. I say if you want one buy one and have some fun with it.

You get a 458 Lott....that will just lead to a 470NE...then you'll miss the bolt action and you'll need a 505 Gibbs....which will then lead you back to doubles and you'll have to buy a 577NE.

So....just purchase a 600NE and be done with it. And you'll be ready for anything from squirrel to polar bear in North America.

More is always better, right? Lol. Might want a .416ish rifle first though. This is the wrong forum if you are trying to be talked out of buying a 458 Lott! The Lott is a great cartridge and will floor anything about anywhere. Definitely no lack of penetration issues on NA game. Lol. I would personally go with a 416 in the over 40 group for the above mentioned critters just due to flatter trajectory. But as LivingTheDream said I've never seen anything more dead than the other. Buy it and have fun!
Cheers,
Cody

P.S.
I do know where there is a very nice CZ in 505 Gibbs at a very reasonable price. Had to fight off the urge to own it myself!

Go for it. You can always use it in Jurassic Park.

"too much" he asks out loud where some wife might see and read?! What's wrong with you man?! Let's just go with more than enough....:D

Your .375 is enough gun and a .458 won't kill them more dead, but it definitely might do it quicker! And if you're looking to be talked into buying something, this is the place to do it...

haha i can already tell you guy are going to be a bad influence :E Laugh:

and yeah....ive seen that too....honestly the only reason i asked about the .458 is because ive looked and cant find one in .505 haha.

but yeah....you guys have sold me ( like you really had to twist my arm, haha).....

honestly i actually really like hunting with a 12g slug, pokes a nice large hole that bleeds out fast.....and ide like to have a similar wound channel in something that will have a longer reach and more penetration at range.....especially on Nilgai and Moose

Rocky Mountain shooters Supply in Ft. Collins, CO. I believe it was about 2700 bucks and was super clean! I tried but can't convince myself I need another one.

Sometimes I think heroine and hookers would have been a cheaper hobby than boomers and bullets but there is more longevity in the guns unless your wife finds out what we really pay for stuff!

you joke, but im from Massachusetts.....i tell my buddies " in this state that heroine would be cheaper than shooting....and also more socially acceptable" haha

In all seriousness to the OP...if you handload, there really is no such thing as too big.

I have killed a squirrel with a .458 and when I was a kid I would shoot my 7MM Rem Mag in the basement.

Handloading!

also, does anyone know what the difference between the CZ 550 "fancy" and the 550 "standard" are?

its only $600-700 more, so im assuming its just a nicer stock?

Just the stock to my understanding.

The CZ makes a great Lott as the rifle is heavy and that helps with the recoil.

Whatever route you go I recommend you get a rifle with plenty of weight if you want to shoot it a bunch. My Lott is on the light side at 8.5 lbs before scope and rings. It's rather lively, but I also bought it to carry after on an elephant or buffalo hunt.

The jump in recoil from a .375 to a full load Lott is definitely significant.

Go for it! I have a Blaser R8 in both .416 Rem and .458 Lott. I love them both but actually prefer the .458 Lott. The Lott is a good step up in recoil from a .375H&H. But I don't notice much of a difference with the .416 Rem. Sometimes I think perceived recoil is as much mental as physical.

IMHO .458 Lott is not a pleasant caliber to shoot , mine uses a 450g bullet and I find the recoil more tolerable than a 500g , I would suggest and take a .416 over a .458 .

As far as i am concerned ,not only is the .416 a nicer rifle to shoot it is also a more versatile caliber.
