Govt allows culling of problem elephants

THE ministry of environment has authorised the shooting of two elephants which damaged infrastructure in the Kalkfeld area last week.

The two elephants have been identified as problem animals, and have been offered to a trophy hunting company for culling.

The ministry of environment's spokesperson Romeo Muyunda today told The Namibian that one of the elephants was already shot dead last Thursday, and that they were hunting for the second one.

Kasamani Kahengombe of Farm Epupa told Nampa on Monday that about 40 elephants have been roaming the area.

He said infrastructure such as water points and fences at about 12 farms has been destroyed, and the affected farmers are unhappy with the pace at which the ministry is handling the matter.

Muyunda on Monday told Nampa that farmers and hunters from Omujeve Hunting Safaris are tracking the two elephants down.

“These elephants have caused damage to property and have also been threatening people's lives, a situation which left the ministry with no choice but to permit these elephants to be culled through trophy hunting,” Muyunda said.

He said N$100 000 will be charged for each elephant, with some of the funds to be deposited into the ministry's Game Products Trust Fund, while the remainder will cover the expenses of the affected farmers.

The meat will be donated to schools and needy people in the surrounding communities.

Just curious, what can you do with the ivory? Ship it to China? and 100K? Not on my list. YMMV.

Best of luck to the lucky hunters.

@Hogpatrol , it looks like it says Namibian Dollar, if so 100K Namibia dollar would be $7,000 -$7500 US, not a bad deal at all!

Excellent price for the tag!

Would love to help the folks out! But sounds like one of the safari outfits has everything under control.

Sign me up for that price :A Callme:

dang....I wish I was in Namibia right now...

Everyone tap the brakes...

If I'm reading this correctly, the price of $7500 is what the government would charge the outfitter. It does not necessarily mean that is what a hunter would pay. The outfitter would mark that up potentially, charge day fees, etc.... So I wouldn't go thinking that this is the new bar for an elephant hunt. As a price comparison for a tag Zim is at $8ooo, again assuming I'm right on the Nam fee just being government.

I'm doing this out of memory, but I believe you can get "own use" elephant in Nam now for around $15k. I bet that if you could find this hunt it would end up in that range, or perhaps slightly less. Now if you were already over there and in the area perhaps you could get it for a trophy fee add on and save some cash?

From my perspective, the great news here isn't that you can get a cheap elephant hunt in Nam, but rather that the Nam government is willing to add "PAC Tags" through trophy hunting in an effort to both take care of a local issue that might otherwise result in poaching and to maximize the benefit to the government and local community. That's where the excitement should be!

P.S. I also really doubt you get to keep the ivory or hide, for those of you that this matters to. I also wonder if the elephants are bull or cow?

I think with government stamp and correct cites permit the ivory should be able to come to the states. This is Namibia

Correct, but will Namibia allow export? That's the question. They don't allow export on "own use," so I'm not sure they would on a PAC animal either?

If they allow export of PAC animals the number of reported PAC problems might just increase exponentially.... And, it would be amazing how only the big bulls caused problems....
