Hi Guys. Just bought myself a .22 Walther rifle any suggestions what size scope I should have fitted on it. I bought the rifle for "fun shoots"

Which model Walther? and what do you consider fun shoots?

either a fixed 4 or compact 2-7 has been what I have used for my 22 rimfires.

Don't know much about the rifle you've bought, but I truly believe a Simmons 22mag scope is one of the best for the money. Then again, it seems as if I'm on a bit of a tighter budget than many here.

Same way I have gone. My Leupold Euro 2-7x33 has the Leupold version of the No. 4 reticle which is basically the heavy duplex without the fat bit on the top part of the reticle. YES ... you read correctly, it is a version of the Heavy Duplex! That reticle works perfectly for target shooting out to 50m and even 75m when set at 6x for either range. It also works very nicely at 2.6x (the scope is actually a 2.6-6.5x) at very close ranges.

Cheap scopes tend to have a very thick reticle to draw your eye to the centre and distract you from the poor image round the edges BUT excessively thin reticles in better quality scopes are an even worse bargain. If you have ever wondered why so few hunters use the Leupold 4x rimfire scope, it is because that scope comes with the Fine Duplex. Specs are available on line for Leupold, Weaver and others. If you have any trouble, send me a PM.

If you can find a Leupold VX-II 3-9x33mm A/O, Rimfire EFR you will not regret it.

Leupold FX-1
I have this scope on a Win 52 Sporter- excellent choice for 22 rimfire. Has parallax zero at 60 yds.

Regardless of the Leupold model, if you send it to Leupold they will reset the parallax toshort range, so that it's suitable for the 1 - 80 yard shots involved. the scopes are generally pre-set for parallax at a few hundred yards to infinity.

:) Sending parcels to and from RSA can be a treat. Unless you travel to US or have friends traveling between US and RSA, might be kind of iffy with a nice scope. It would be nice to get a 22 rf dedicated scope with the parallax set to shorter, normal 22 rf ranges to begin with.

General 22 plinking with most "high power" types scopes may not be much of an issue. However if your rifle is capable of good accuracy then you may very well notice POIs jumping around at shorter 22 rf ranges with the parallax zero of the high power type scopes set out at 100 yds.

Any one you like as long as its Leupold!

I'm not bashing Leupold as I own 5 on various plains or DG rifles but you don't need to spend a lot of money for a scope, I have a Nikon Prostaff 4x12 with a BDC recticle on my 22 rifle, you could even go 3x9 Nikon has great glass in their cheap scopes, and they also have a lifetime warranty

If money is no object I'd get the VX-2 3-9x33 AO rimfire scope. Second choice would be the Weaver 3-9x32 AO rimfire scope.

Any opinions on a Nikko sterling 4x32 scope
I have never owned one but some reports Iv'e read do not talk kindly about them.

They were used quite a bit here in NZ years ago with most being thought of as low grade scopes. I wouldn't put something like that on a Walther. It deserves something better.
I do like leupolds but also think the Nikon is very good glass in the non euro and mid to upper range of quality scopes

Thank you for your input. I've decided to go and see what's available locally in maybe a vortex.

I have several Vortex Crossfires which are the low end of the line but their glass and build quality are excellent for the price. If you lived in the States, I'm sure there are more than a few members who have some excellent scopes there not using. and be glad to make you a deal. I have some Leupolds and a few Redfields when they were as good(maybe better) than Leupolds and a Bausch and Lomb Balvar 8 just to name a few
