.300 Holland & Holland Mag

I have the same rifle and it loves 68 grs of R22 with the 200 gr Nosler Partition. I get about 2900 fps based on the same load getting 2850 in a 24 inch barreled Rem 700. Its a very accurate load. I also had good luck with the 180 Barnes TTSX using R22 and H4831, but in a .300 mag I prefer 200 grs, as I think the 180 is better suited to the '06. Now having said that the load I am taking to Namibia next month for Eland is that same 200 gr Partition in my Ruger '06. My load is a full max load by Nosler anyway, of 58 grs of R22 that clocks at just over 2600 fps for 3000 ME. Should be a good load, reliably accurate. Why am I taking an '06 instead of something more exotic? Simple. I have never hunted with an '06 before, anywhere.

Simple. I have never hunted with an '06 before, anywhere.

Fancy a hunter that has been around as LONG as you have Ses, never having hunted with the iconic '06.
You should be tarred and feathered and put on public display for condemnation and ridicule !

If the 06 hadn't been a military caliber, it never would have made it! LOL

I had a choice 36 years ago(?) maybe longer "they" all said get a 30-06,I got a 7mm RM and have never looked back.....better!

I know right? That's why its going this time. I have a good shooting old model Ruger 77, that is handy and light and ready to roll.

The 300 H&H is one with which I've had a long standing love affair. I've always been drawn to classic cartridges and the 300 H&H was my first sort of custom rifle. I asked Remington's custom shop if they'd do one of their left handed KS Mountain rifles in 300 H&H. They said sure and about 8 months later, 4 days before deer season, it arrived. I grabbed some loads from my previous 300 and they shot great. A few days later I killed a decent little mule deer buck. Since then many deer, elk, pronghorn and caribou have fallen to the 300.

I used to use 150 and 165 grain bullets but as I've gotten older have come to appreciate the heavy bullets in any caliber. I shoot 220 grain Nosler Partitions in mine and am quite satisfied with their performance.

One of my old friends who hunted Africa many times owned two centerfire rifles, both pre-64 model 70s, one in 300 H&H and the other in 375 H&H. On one Africa hunt he and the guide were after kudu with the 300 when they stumbled onto a particularly nice cape buffalo. The guide asked if my friend wanted the buffalo. He said yes and took the shot with the 300 and a 180 grain Partition. The bull went about ten yards and fell over, its heart destroyed. The guide said he'd not seen one die that easy in a long time. I'm aware of the caliber restrictions in most areas, but this happened many years ago. I don't recall the country or if there were caliber restrictions there. The guide was well equipped with a stopping rifle in case things went sideways.

I could imagine life without many of my guns. Two that are staying with me as long as I can still draw breath are the 300 H&H and the 400 Whelen.

I have two Model 70 Winchesters chambered in .300 H&H.

One is a Pre-64 that took me quite a while to find. I wanted one in very good condition and they can be hard to find. When I got it I worked up a load for it that does very well, now it mainly sits in the back of the safe.

My other is the one I obtained while searching for the Pre-64. I bought the new version of the Model 70 Alaskan in .375 H&H and took it to my gunsmith. He then removed the factory barrel and replaced it with a barrel of the same contour, but chambered in .300 H&H with a length of 26". I also had him take the iron sites off the .375 barrel and install on the new barrel. Bingo...now I had a brand new Model 70 in .300 H&H. It is topped with a Leupold 3x9 w/German #4 reticle w/Warne QD rings. Took me a while to find a load that it really liked...but I found 19lb. of H870 in a gun store that was going out of business. With that powder pushing a 200gr. A-Frame the rifle does well...under MOA...as good as I can shoot anyway. I really like this combination, it is my go to rifle for coyotes, hogs and deer around the house.

Btw...the H870 does very well in my Model 70 .264 Win. Mag as well.

Yikes 200grain A Frame for yotes? your definitely not under gunned :ROFLMAO:;)
But really like your idea of converting a Model 70 Alaskan in .375 H&H.

Cheers

You are certainly correct about not being under gunned for coyotes. Lol

The reason I use it is that where I live in SC we have one of the longest deer seasons in the country...4 months in my area. That means my rifle and a shotgun spend a lot of time riding in the seat of the truck. I am blessed to live way out in the country where among other things it is legal to hunt deer with hounds. So if I am in the area and a race is going on I can join right in. Use the shotgun w/buckshot if shooting conditions are questionable and a rifle if I need to reach out and touch one. Hogs and coyotes are considered vermin and can be shot on sight. Yes, a lighter caliber may work just as well...but I really like that rifle.

Took out my 60 year old Win mod 70 300 h&h over the weekend and just wanted to stretch it out a bit. The river was up on my longer range area so I could manage 300 yards. The center to center measurement here was 1 1/4" @ 300 so I was very pleased with those results.

Nice shooting @Southwind and I like your setup also. May have to investigate that further!

Impressive :A Bravo:very nice shooting ? Hand loads?

Yes, some old remington peters brass, cci250 primers, 70 grain reloader 22, 180 grain TSX's just a tad over 3000 fps. The rifle loves this load.

After purchasing a 300 H+H I thought that there may be a few members that would care to share their loads for 180 gr`s but more so the 200 grain and 250 grain pills.
I do have four other 30 cal magnums but this is a bit different...oh and a classic!

For a good all round load try the Hornady 212 Grain ELD-X with +- 57 grains of S365 . (Somchem from RSA) Work up carefully. In my Sako sub MOA groupings is not too difficult.

Acquired my first .300 H&H, post 64 M70 one month ago. (Had wanted a .300 H&H for a long time). Is an 87 or 88 model with a cheap 30 year old Tasco scope. Picked up two boxes of Hornady 180 gr Inter Bond ammo. Before finishing the first box, shot the below target at......not 100...but 150 yards. Needless to say I am sold!
