Lovely old girl and in great nic as well. As has been said it is a rifle to be used as it was designed to be used and so the dah is quite standard for the day.

Soooooo i'm guessing my plan to junk the original stock and exchange with a synthetic, drill and tap for a big 3 - 9 scope and have it threaded for a muzzle break won't be too popular

The drop was common in the day when all shooting was done from a standing position with open sights. If you've a chance to handle (and shoot) such a setup I think you'll quickly grow to appreciate the form.

As for the swell through the receiver, this was done to reinforce the stock in this area (to prevent splaying). It was also common, in the day.

Agreed the drop is make shooting with irons better. I have a 100+yr old little London made rifle but the drop does not look as much as that one.

In all seriousness, this looks a mighty fine rifle BUT, I too have a couple of rifles specifically stocked for open sight use and the drop at heel is only 1 & 1/2" and this lines me up with the sights perfectly.

I dunno, maybe I have no/short neck but to me the stock on this looks as though it has been cut for a Giraffe.

When I built my Erfurt SR 6.5 I made it with a 3/4 drop at comb and 1 3/4 at heel and it is perfect for me with the irons and I can comfortably use the scope as well.

I went to the page and made the pic large enough to take measurment that showed a LOP of 120mm and a DAH of 16mm so if we tripple thiose measurments for a 360 mm LOP and a 48mm DAH which is under 2 inches for a 14 1/8 LOP so it is not excessive at all, just the perspective of those who are used to the modern straight stocked scope ready rifles.

This is 1 3/4 DAH and it shoulders just fine. That plesier mauser would be just as comfortable
